Odd sizingAfter using the Escalante Racer for fairly fast walking for a few months, I decided to get the 2.5 to have a little additional cushion for a morton's neuroma. The cushion is there but the sizing is different from the Racer. To get a tight fit on the 2.5, I have to tighten the laces down to the point where the sides are about touching each other. Even with my narrow feet, the Racer had plenty of space when tightened to where they were comfortable. Apart from that they're fine but I ordered them thinking the only difference between the two was a little extra cushion in the 2.5. The two shoes are very much different and I've ordered another pair of the Racer.

Exactly what I was looking forSuper comfortable with a soft upper and snug heel and ankle fit, but plenty of width in the toe box obviously. They "sock-like feel" remind me a little of allbirds sneakers but construction feels much higher quality. I alternate these escalante 2.5s with a more minimal barefoot style shoe brand with zero cushioning. I can switch back and forth between the two seamlessly. My other (more barefoot style) shoes keep me honest on good form and keep my foot muscles strong, but these altras have just enough cushion to let me to add the distance I want without getting injured, or forcing me to sacrifice form (because of the zero drop and wide toe box). Exactly what I was looking for.

I've always been a big fan... but was less than impressedI've spent the last several years running exclusively on Altra shoes (and the Escalante!). I was expecting just a routine switch-out. But while these are definitely comfortable shoes when you slip them on, the fabric is a too stretchy / flexible, and I find my feet slipping around a lot in the shoes (so much so that I got blisters). Definitely bummed, since I've been such a big advocate of Altra, ever since I started running in them. Not too sure what to do with these shoes now... If Altra ever needs some user testing to test their products before mass producing them, I'd be happy to, because I want to support a brand that I care about.

Best of Both Worlds! The Escalante 2.5 is the perfect combination of the 1.5 and the 2. I absolutely loved the sock-like feel of the Escalante 1.5 and the cushion was a perfect balance between being soft and responsive. The only downside was that your foot could slide a little when going around corners. Altra tried to fix that in the 2 but ended up going a little too far and the upper became a little too constrictive while the midsole became a little too firm. The 2.5 goes back to that sock-like upper feel of the 1.5 with extra support in the upper only where needed and the midsole is back to the sweet ride of the 1.5 as well!

Comfortable but confusingComfortable and breathable! BUT: 1. why are the laces so long?! 2. where is the extra hole for a runner's knot? 3. why are the eyelets on the outer touching each other after lacing the shoes down tight (otherwise they will slip)? i wear 11.5 in every other Altra show model and no other shoe does this 4. why is one of my left toes hitting the from (or is it the top) of the shoe? again does not happen in any other Altra model! I love Altra and wanted to love these. I have none of these issues with Rivera, Escalante Racer, and Torin--strange sizing and other design choices here. I guess I'll wait for the 3.

Toe box shrunk between 1.5 and 2.5I've run in several pairs of Escalante 1 and 1.5s for years and loved them. Based on the reviews, I skipped the Escalante 2's and ordered extra pairs of 1.5s in reserve. I've now bought my first pair of 2.5s, and they're going straight back. The overall shoe size is pretty similar (size 13s) but the toe box has shrunk to the point where my big toe is scraping against the side even before I take my first step in them. Hopefully I can find more 1.5s somewhere. Why not just leave the foot shape alone? I thought that was the main selling point of the brand.

A Step Back From the 2.0Although I know there were a lot of detractors to the 2.0 version, it was one of my favorite shoes of all time. Unfortunately I think the 2.5 version has taken a small step back from the previous version. Maybe it's just me, but the 2.5 seems a little more snug, which in my case is not a good thing as I have somewhat wide feet. Also, it appears that all of the newest Altra's no longer have the loop for the laces running all the way down the tongue, but only have it for the last couple of eyelets; please bring this feature back as having the tongue slide around on the top of my foot is one of my pet peeves with all running shoes.

Poor qualityLogo started coming off within the first week and tread started coming off on week 3. I am not hard on shoes, at all. I sent my first pair back to the store and got a second pair thinking it was just bad luck. Got my second pair - same exact thing. Could not be more disappointed. I love Atlras. I can only hope this was due to a rush of manufacturing and not the brand starting to slack in quality. I'll be sending this pair back as well and I'll look to buy a pair of the 1.5 or 2.0s. I've never had an issue with the superiors but I was hoping for a good road shoe. Hoping they do better with 3.0.
