Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great running shoe This is my third Altra Escalante purchase, following the first version of this model and a Racer model. I’m hooked on the zero drop platform. These shoes are very light. The material of the upper is very comfortable and breathable. The foot-shaped design is great. I’ve put about 40 miles on these and they felt broken in on the first step. I highly recommend trying out the Altra zero drop design and these are a great shoe for any length run. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great running shoes I was a little unsure about the transition to a zero drop shoe, but they have been great. No problems and I feel like I am running better with these shoes. Get your running form down before the transition. Not for heel strikers. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great road shoe This has become my favorite road shoe in the last few years. Altra has slimmed down the heel of the shoe to fit a more narrow heel/ankle area and as well as the midfoot. The result for me is a hold that is superior to how they have fit me in the past without having to over tighten the shoe. The overall fit from heel to toe, level of cushioning, and responsiveness make this shoe a pleasure to run anywhere from middle to longer distance. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Another great product from the ALTRA team Ordered these to replace the ALTRA Paradigm 4.5 shoe which I had to return due to poor fit. Fits great on my foot. Comfortable. Have put about 70 miles on them so far and am very happy. Also a great looking shoe. With any ALTRA shoe, order a half size up. I also have the Lone Peak 4, which I like even more than these. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favorite running shoe I have been running in the Escalante 2's for a year or two now (since they were released). They're definitely a bit tighter than the originals or 1.5's, but this helps a big issue of the previous versions - reduced heel slip and better control on turns. Rated 5 out of 5 by from The only shoe I'll run in. This shoe has an appropriate amount of both cushion and support. Wide toe box is a must for me. Like I said, this is the only running shoe that I'll buy. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Escalantes 2 Is Good, Prior Versions Were Special The Escalantes 2 is a more middle of the road shoe than its predecessors. More rigid heel cup, firmer and less flexible sole, ridiculously short tongue, and a switch to a smooth tread from the prior ribbed tread. The last limits the kinds of surfaces you can run on. With the prior versions' ribbed treads I felt safe running on wet pavements, sure-footed running on and climbing rocks and even running during the first hour of a snow. The 2's just feel different because the uppers are stiffer. The prior models I could lace the shoes as tight as wanted and they still felt comfortable because the fabric gave so much. It was like running in moccasins. There's still plenty of room in the 2's, but because they are stiffer I feel my foot slipping around inside. So what do you get with the 2's? You get a faster shoe that does better under certain conditions than its predecessors. The only seriously dumb thing about the shoe is the short tongue. My lace knot just sits on the top of the tongue and I haven't had it slip up onto my foot yet. But, it seems like it might. This version of the Escalantes is no more a lace it up and try everything from road to rocks, with the exception of deep mud, shoe. To be fair to shoe, I am a niche runner. Am in my mid 60's, over 6 feet tall and I run more technical trail than streets. The roominess and comfort is still acceptable, with is great for the arthritis in my feet. I'm now doing 10 - 16 mile training runs once a week on asphalt, am not having a problem if my feet swell. I'd be comfortable recommending this shoe to a road runner, feel sad the Escalantes is no longer a fun option in my mind for the drier trails of any surface. So its no longer that comfortable all-purpose shoe to recommend to those just starting their running careers, like I was a couple of years ago. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
