Love the shoe, but it needs a few improvementsI really like this shoe. Once I acclimated to the different feel from what I was previously accustomed to, I found that it provides great support and cushion, and it is very lightweight. I agree with the other reviewer that the laces on this shoe are the worst I've ever encountered; I am constantly having to tie these shoes because the laces won't stay tied. My other hope for future versions of this shoe is to make the outsole more durable. I am only at 40 days/65 miles of walking in this shoe and the outsole is severely worn in many places. I can't imagine that I am going to get more than 2-3 months out of this shoe, which is a little disappointing.

Great shoes with a feature every other shoe misses! This is probably my 15th pair of Altras. I have enjoyed many different shoes for everything from Running marathons to ultras. Roads trails and creek crossings. I'm done with my crazy race days and need a daily road/light trail shoe that feels great. This shoe was offered in NARROW and I had to give it a try. I have always had to lace my shoes all the way down as I have a flat arch and narrow width. My ties spread out a lot because I run barefoot and in sandals mixing it up. I think it's called "toe splay" not sure. Any way a wide toe box in a narrow shoe is quite specialized and I love the ride. Great shoe!

Messed up tongueI purchased the shoes to replace another pair of ultras that were defective that I had shipped back to ultra. When I walk in the shoes the tongue Will not stay in the center of my foot it's like it's stitch strong and goes to the outside of my foot. I have tied my shoes numerous ways and it doesn't make a difference it still will not stay in the center. My PT put these me and the shoes due to knee pain and they have helped with my knee pain tremendously because of the heel to toe drop but this is my second pair with an issue. Just getting very discouraged with my second pair that I replaced so I would have a pair of shoes to walk while the other ones were shipped back to you. Thoughts?

Great training shoe!Super bouncy midsole which for me makes them perfect for everyday trainers or 10k-half marathon shoes. I normally wear Torin's or Paradigms for longer road runs but depending on a person's cushion preferences they could use this shoe for longer runs too. I got the first version after having some concerns that they might be too narrow but ended up liking them so much that I was excited to get the 2s. The 2s really feel like the first version but the updated upper really makes them an attractive-looking shoe in my opinion. Lastly these shoes are pretty durable...I could see them lasting 500 plus miles for me and perhaps 1000 plus miles for someone who has better form and is a bit lighter on their feet than I am.

A great combo of cushion & response[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Rivera 2 takes everything that was great about the original, & improves upon it. This is mostly felt in the upper, as the midsole/outsole are seemingly unchanged. The mesh being used feels more durable, provides a better fit, and it looks better (in my opinion). The Ego foam strikes a great balance in being both soft & responsive, the Rivera 2 has quickly taken up a big chunk of my daily training miles. The slim fitting footshape still gives that signature Altra feel, but just a little bit more streamlined.

Hey, not bad!Look, it surprised me and many other Altra fans when they introduced the Rivera and the "slim" footshape profile. When it comes to rolling out a new paradigm in your brand philosophy, that whole deal felt about as botched as it gets. However, there was a lot to like about the original Rivera despite its more narrow shape. I'm glad to say that the things that were really wrong with V1 are mostly resolved. First, this is an upper update, which is good because the upper was the only thing wrong with the first Rivera. In fact, the upper on V1 was so bad that it ruined the whole shoe for me. No matter what I did, I couldn't get a good lockdown, and the upper overall felt cheap and inflexible. But this new mesh, whatever they've done to it, manages to be accommodating and securing in all the right places. I'm no longer lacing up these shoes every which way trying to get a secure lockdown. Now, it's just happening. And that's great! The upper is also super comfortable, which is just a nice bonus, and stretches well to compensate for a slightly shallow toebox. In fact, while the upper on the Rivera is not quite as pliable and premium feeling as the knit on on the Escalante, this shoe now feels like essentially a slimmer Escalante. It has the same performance, flexibility, and comfort. Finally, this is the only Altra shoe I've ever had to size up in. I'm usually a 9.5 in most Altras but I needed a 10 in the Rivera 2. I don't know why, and it's not necessarily a drawback, I just thought it was curious and worth mentioning.

Exellent daily trainerI've run in Altra shoes for over five years, including the "One", Kayente, Escalante Racer, and multiple versions of Escalante, Torin, Paradigm, and now Rivera. While I agree with another reviewer than offering multiple widths of each model would be ideal, I also don't believe that downrating a shoe because it isn't ideal for your personal shaped foot is really helpful. The Rivera 2 is designed for a medium-width foot...full stop. If you need a wider shoe, move to the Torin, they are similar in many regards. I got around 400 miles on my Rivera 1, though they were a bit compressed at the end. The Rivera 2, built on the same platform feels great underfoot. Running mostly on pavement, I no longer buy the Escalante because I need more protection. The Rivera fits the bill perfectly. The upper in the new model is a big step up. My toes usually poke holes in the uppers of shoes with thin mesh, and this new upper offers both better lock-down and appears to be more durable than that of Rivera 1. Cornering in Rivera 2 is better than most Altras, as the upper really holds the foot in place nicely. Huge plus for me compared to the Torin or Escalante. Finally, my only gripe is that the laces are a bit short and could use more elastic to stay tied.

Not my choice for a long distance trainerI bought these as a daily trainer. The shoes felt great right out of the box and I was able to run 40 mile weeks with no complaints. After running ~100 miles, I developed extreme pain in my feet during longer runs. At the 15 mile mark, my feet felt as if I had broken my feet from the arch, to the ball, through the top of my foot. The shoes wore very fast as well (see tread wear in attached photos). I ended up buying different shoes after 166 miles, much less life than I expect from a reputable brand. I would not recommend this shoe for longer distances, 10k seems to be the sweet spot. To summarize, I was initially impressed but ultimately disappointed in the shoe's performance and durability. I ended up buying Torin 6s and the issue has subsided.
