Rated 4 out of 5 by from No resemblance to the Torin here have run in Torin for over 4 years, through every evolution. This shoe is OK, but not a solution if you are a torin lover. For me it is 1/2 size too short. Ride seems good but is not the land cruiser the Torin has traditionally been, and i do not mean that the torin is a heavy shoe but is firmer and seems more durable to me. I also read with the same concern as others, Vanity Fair may be monkeying too much with a good model. The Torin could use some update but this is, as the reviews indicate, more along the escalante line of shoe. More to come later as i alternate this shoe with the Topo UltraFly.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Altra Shoes are no longer Altra Since the VF Imagewear acquisition, Altra has focused more on aesthetics than its actual customers. The wide toe box is all but gone. First they killed the wide toebox with the Timp 2. Now they create a new shoe that has a toe box virtually indistinguishable from any pair of Nikes or Saucony's. Your pinky toe will be cramped, guaranteed. I have no idea if the rest of this shoe was any good, because it went right back in the box after the first try on. We buy Altras for the zero drop and the wide toe box first and everything else second. There are hundreds of other shoe brands that already focus on function following form. If Altra joins the ranks of the "me too" brands, we will just go elsewhere.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Probably not I Have loved Altras for the wide toebox and have loved 15 various pair of their running shoes in the past five years. When ordering these online without trying a pair on, I just assumed all the Altra shoes had a wide toebox. When opening the box I immediately noticed they looked like a regular shoe. I cannot imagine that the narrow toebox will work for me four running anything over 5 miles. This is so very disappointing to me and now I am seeing a lot of other reviews saying Altra is getting away from the wide toebox. I will probably have to start my search for another brand with a wide toebox.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Why Altra why? Too narrow. If you're going to make a narrow shoe just call it narrow, instead of using descriptors such as "streamlined" or "tailored". That way consumers who don't want a narrow shoe won't buy it. If you are going to offer multiple Footshapes to fit different feet, as you have claimed in responses to reviews, you should make it clear which shoe models fall into which category, and have a chart that shows how all of the fits compare. The first place your customers hear about your new fit system should not be in your responses to negative reviews, seems fairly obvious. I'm rooting for you Altra, I have been a loyal customer for over a decade and I'm hoping you find your way out of this, but you're making it really hard to like you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hope you keep making this shoe. I've been running in Escalantes for the last few years, they were great but a little bit sloppy and unstructured. Loved them anyway, especially because of the Ego foam (Which is also the reason I bought my King Mtn 1.5s which I LOVE!) and was going to buy a new pair as my annual running shoe purchase. Saw the information and reviews of the Rivera and decided to give them a try. Best running shoes I've ever owned! The only shoes that came close were the Adidas Supernova Glide 8s. Perfect combination of cushioning, comfort and solidity/seriousness. Can't recommend them enough. BTW, my 10th pair of Altras overall, thanks for what you do.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great daily trainer! I use 4 Altra shoes, the Escalante Racer for workouts, the Torin 5 for recovery and easy long runs, and the Escalante 2.5 and Rivera for daily trainer duties. I find the Rivera to be a great shoe for my midweek runs when I'm a bit beat up from my workout but still have a 90 minute run with a bit of speedwork on the schedule, or when I have an easy 60 minute run but don't need the soft, squishy Torin. The Torin is a bit too soft for the speedwork and the Rivera I find more forgiving on tired legs than the Escalante. Great shoe! I have almost 400 miles on my shoes, they've held up well!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Narrow, lacks "toe box" The Rivera is a very standard running shoe. The expansive toe box is gone -- they almost feel wider in the midfoot foot than the fore foot. They are fine on shorter runs and the cushion is fantastic. That being said, these are nothing like the Torin 4 or LP. (I bought them to replace my aging Torins.) I'd almost certainly get blisters on the outside of my foot/little toe if I took these to the church of the long run. They are an "average" cushion shoe. To me, they feel no different than a Brooks Ghost, Asics Kayono, Nike Pegasus etc. I also feel like I supinate in them a bit more than the Torin, but that could just be the new foam. Totally plausible that the shoe is a similar width inside, but if so, the way it is sewn makes it feel cramped.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than other reviews suggested! Altra has been my exclusive running shoe for the past 8 years. I'm on my 14th or 15th pair, and I'd consider myself a "faithful" Altra customer. As someone with very wide, almost flat, feet, the reviews about the narrowness worried me. I decided to try them on at a local store, and they felt great. After several runs, I gotta say, these are great shoes. So light and springy, with just the right amount of cushion. They almost feel like the old Impulse that I loved so much. They may be slightly narrow, but just SLIGHTLY. That said, the upper is not restrictive at all so the width is a non-issue for me. Again, I have very wide feet and they are great. I hope this model lasts for many years to come!
