the nurse with the wurst feet from
Nursing shoe salvationI had to go down from an 8.5 to an 8 on these shoes because the shape of the toe box accommodates for my wide feet and I still have plenty of room for my toes at an 8. I have a small bunion that I developed working as a nurse but it strangely grew more underneath my foot on the ball of my foot. Every doctor told me to get a wide shoe and nothing stopped the pain from standing until I got these. The zero drop was the solution to the pressure on the balls of my feet and I have plenty of arch support as well as room for my bunion to not get irritated. Literally tried every brand. I spent almost $1,000 and this was the only thing that worked for me.

HeavenlyI'm a big fan of the 2.5. Right out of the box, it felt like a dream. I found 2.0 to be a bit stiff, however, after 200 miles, they felt perfect. I just don't want to wait 200 miles to break in a shoe. Compared to the Kayenta, I find the Escalante has more room in the toe box, but not as much as the Torin or Torin Plush (I had a lot of lateral movement in the Plush). The Escalante Racer has a little more ground contact, and, in my experience, wears down a bit faster than the Escalante 2.5. To me, this is the happy medium I was looking for. I'm tempted to stock pile, because I worry the next update will change too much!

Love Escalantes, hate the colorsI've been wearing Escalantes for years, since the originals. I've gone through at least 7 or 8 pairs and am now on the 2.5 (which are the best/closest to the original since they started changing - the 2.0s were entirely too inflexible and firm). I'm getting close to needing a new pair of 2.5s but the colors are so bad. Please please get some better colors! I'm having a hard time pulling the trigger to order when the colors are soooo ugly. NOT pastels, and NOT the red/black/white thing. The Youth Kokiri has a great dark blue option and a neutral maroon... How about some normal colors like that?

LOVE these shoes!I walk several miles per day. The shoes I have been wearing for years had started to pinch my toes. My feet are wide through the toe box and narrow through the heel, which make it difficult to find shoes that fit. I saw an ad for Altra shoes and decided to give them a try. I am so glad I did! I can walk pain free for the first time in ages. They are so comfortable and don't rub my feet or toes. I do use my own orthotics with them; I tried them without, and they didn't feel super supportive. I liked them so much that I purchased a pair of the LP Alpine. I only wish that Altra had more "lifestyle" shoes - I would definitely buy them!

Perfection!I struggle with consistent foot pain and am working with a PT who specializes in gait/lower extremity and recommended these and I'm so grateful she did! These shoes have a wide toe box that allows for proper splay and I can even wear my CorrectToes in them. The profile is just right so they feel snug without being tight (like the 2.0) and the cushion is just dreamy. I had been wearing barefoot trainers that I liked ok but after long walks/hikes/etc my feet were so sore. I do need the cushion and these provide that without feeling heavy and still providing the zero drop feature. I've got 50+ miles on them so far and I'm still as happy with them as day one. Would love to see many more color choices.

My black toe is no longer black & hip pain is less! :)For year and years I wore a different brand who discontinued my model. Since switching around New Year's my one toe (black for years) is back to normal color and my hip/IT band pain (again for years) has lessened. Dealing with some plantar fasciitis as I continue to get used to zero vs 4-mm drop, but that is soooo minor compared to the hip pain I used to have. I feel like I need a little more bulk for longer runs, so I recently tried the Rivera-love those as well. And trying the Torin for walking my dogs-so cushiony! Looking forward to trying the Lone Peak when my trail shoes wear out. I'm a convert! Just wish I'd done it sooner.

MaybeThese shoes are great for my wide foot and over supination. Nevertheless, I have ordered this shoe 3 times. The first pair I purchased at a running store with limited sizes and colors and purchased an 8. I am sending back yet another order because the sizes have no consistency. An 8 can be too big or 'just right", a 7.5 can be the same size as an 8, and a 7 may be close to fitting. Most of my shoes are 7s, some 6.5. This will be my very last try ordering. Altra sizing person, are you listening? And...how will I be compensated for ordering & returning, again and again and again?

MissI purchased my first pair of Altra's, Lone Peak trail running shoes last fall. I love them! When it was time to update my road runners I wanted to try Altra's again. I naturally have wide feet and buy a D width. With Altra I have found I do not need the D width because of the natural forefoot design of the altra brand. Unfortunately I found the Escalante to run too large and to be to much of a minimalist shoe with little arch support to maintain my foot health while running. I thought I could at least continue to wear these shoes for walking, though found again they do not offer enough support for my arch to comfortably do so.
