Durable Water Repellent
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is a coating that is applied to fabrics which makes them water-resistant, or hydrophobic. A DWR finish doesn't interfere with breathability, which makes it perfect for adverse conditions in the backcountry.

Pertex Microlight

Pertex Microlight
Pertex Microlight is a durable, well-balanced fabric that excels at protecting your insulation. It is lightweight, yet abrasion resistant and will resist the elements. Your insulation will be free to trap and maintain your body warmth.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Go-to mid weight puffy jacket I have used this jacket for basically everything climbing related. The Hot Forge Puffy is a warm mid weight puffy jacket that is very packable. The hood is well sized to allow good mobility even while wearing a helmet. I have used it extensively, and it's held up very well. Nothing crazy here, just a well priced, well made, go-to puffy jacket that you will find yourself living in and bringing to the crag for basically everything but the dog days of summer. The two things that I think would dramatically improve this piece, from good to great, are: 1) internal pocket (chest pocket) storage with a harness clip loop, and 2) better cuff design. I am 6'1" 175lbs and the medium fits perfectly.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great sizing but non-functional hood I'm 6'2", 200 lbs. The XL sizing is perfect for layering over everything else, especially in the length. However, the cinch system in the hood doesn't work, bareheaded or with a climbing helmet. Instead, you are stuck with a floppy funnel for cold and snow, because the hood can't be tightened around your face. The hood's rear shock cord is internally connected to the front perimeter cord in a T-shape, such that everything is supposed to tighten at once, but in practice it doesn't work. The irony is that if you manually pull the front perimeter shock cords, the hood tightens up beautifully around the face. This proves the jacket could have been made right— but wasn't.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A little on the heavy, bulky side. Very warm. This jacket is incredibly warm and well insulated, and does retain warmth when wet thanks to the blend. I prefer the Prima-Loft over down though, and I have moved toward 100% poly insulation since this purchase. Down is just too “puffy” for me. The hood is adjustable and helmet-compatible, and the underarms are gusseted to allow for easier movement when climbing up, which is BD’s specialty. It also why the jacket excels as a winter climber. I like the abundance of pockets. The external pockets are perfect for keeping your hands warm, while the internal pockets store my passes, wallet, and some fuel for the climb. One last thing of note. It is heavier than my other insulating layers, but not so heavy it cannot be used as a pack layer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm, water resistant, packable I have used this in subzero temperatures in the Colorado mountains, recently on an extended high altitude bike tour in snow and rain. I find this to be a highly utilitarian hoody for hiking, cold weather camping, and as an added layer of insulation in my down bag. The hood is generously sized and can be drawn taught with the adjustment feature. I have another high-insulation hoody from Mammut and this is far better in every category. Some have complained about the long sleeves - it's a feature that keeps your hands warm when you don't want to use gloves, and it's very effective. I don't care if it isn't up to fashionista standards - it works!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect for anything Warm midnight jacket that is very versatile .I like the jacket. It has a trim fit with room for additional layers which is pretty cool because you could get a wider temperature rating out of it ,yet it doesn’t look big or Bulky . But having said that it’s long in the arms and torso ,which seem too long for older Black diamond shells to fit right ,unless you buy a new shell which I did ( liquid point shell ). Its really the arm lank which annoyed .It doesn’t fit like the Hot forge which is for warmer weather.I have gotten used too it Because the wrist are cinched lightly it won’t fall all the way past the bottom of hand .I do love the jacket, I use it from 30 to 0F hiking and around town. Simple, highly effective ,go to jacket.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely Versatile Jacket - Crazy Warm! I bought these jackets for our EMS Rescue crew as our standard winter duty jacket. We live in Gunnison, Colorado, pretty much the coldest spot in the continental US. Our crew absolutely love these jackets -we hammer them in the front country, wrecks, backcountry, wherever. I am totally impressed with the build and warmth; they are very light and highly compressible. I consider them true to size. My one criticism that pretty much everyone has is the Magic Johnson arm length -yes, the arms are a bit long. However, none of my guys are really bothered by this as there is a great seal against a glove with the extra length. Also, they ride low on the hand minimizing skin exposure to the elements. You can also easily push up the arms past the elbow if you're working and get too warm. Some of the woman complain they are more of a men's fit -fair enough, I don't see that as a design flaw, but if you're buying one for your wife, consider the cut. All in all, super high quality down jacket that has withstood the rigors of EMS work in a very unforgiving environment. We are extremely pleased.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Warm without overdoing it on loft Fits true to size. The jacket is a medium "puffy" in terms of loft, which means it is still compressible without taking up a lot of space in a pack. The little feathers still come out of various locations just like any other down jacket, but so far it has held up okay. The hood and cinching on the hood leave a little to be desired as there is only a head circumference cinch, no chin/face cinch. If you're looking to take this jacket into the arctic, it is not designed for that. I'd rate it satisfactory with a base layer at 15-30F. Any colder and you need more layers or some activity.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid This jacket has been the main piece of insulation in my system on a number of climbs in sub freezing temps. It is definitely too warm if you are working hard, but whenever you are at a standstill, for a belay or just a rest, the Cold Forge is a dependable piece of equipment against the cold. It is highly packable and extremely warm for a jacket that isn't full down. The Cold Forge performs well above expectation. This jacket even kept me going in an open bivy at 14,000 ft. with temps in the high teens. I would never recommend that situation, but I would recommend this jacket every time!
