DWR tech

Durable Water Repellent
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is a coating that is applied to fabrics which makes them water-resistant, or hydrophobic. A DWR finish doesn't interfere with breathability, which makes it perfect for adverse conditions in the backcountry.

Product Reviews
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent material! Breathable and flexible. I have had this jacked long enough to do two 14K summit runs. It's still full on winter in Colorado at that altitude. I did a peak called Grays a few weeks ago and the storm I was in dumped 20" of snow above 10K. This jacket is 100% waterproof and does not wet-out like other jackets, even better than other gore-tex ones. The treatment is amazing. Breaths like a soft shell, and is flexible. I still can't believe it's a tri-layer. It was also very warm for the weight, so I would consider something different for really warm weather. I am 6'0", 200 lbs, 44" chest and need an XL for layering. Without layers, the large fit excellent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality is superior to all! I have several hardshell jackets, but I believe the BD Sharp End is the best of the bunch. Everything you could want from a shell is provided in one high-quality jacket: very low pack weight, supreme weather protection, fantastic mobility for climbing or skiing, and durability for hard use. I am 6'0", 190 with an athletic, but muscular build. For BD layers, I am a solid XL. I ordered this in Large since the cut is more generous as a shell. My recommendation is to size down if you are using modern layering insulation underneath (not the big, puffy down). It is cut with plenty of room for layers.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from weak jacket I have been skiing with this jacket for lees than one year, and there are three holes in the jacket. I have never ripped a jacket in my life until i used this one. I have two minor holes that I don't know the cause of. I also have a substantial rip in the arm. This jacket is extremely fragile and I'm very disappointed in this investment

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall solid light-weight shell. I have used this shell in three different trips this season. First was ice climbing in Bozeman. The shell fits nice and slim while still allowing enough layers under (6 ft, 200 lbs, size L). It did not ride up through the harness during climbing and provided great flexibility. The hood fit well over a climbing helmet. The second trip was for a winter climb of Mt. Baldy in SoCal. The shell was very, very comfortable next to skin. The only drawback in this use were the functionality of the pit zips. They are a little bit in an awkward placement and require you to either take off the shell or for you to get nice an intimate with your partner... not necessarily the worst thing. On the flip side of that, the shell breaths extremely well... Almost Goretex Active well, so the pit zips were more of an extra dump of heat more than anything. On the summit, winds pushed more than 30 mph, yet it cut wind perfectly. I glissaded roughly 700 ft on the way down with it and there was no damage whatsoever. The last trip was skiing at Mammoth during a snow storm (in resort). For wind/waterproofness, top notch shell. It held its own in whiteout conditions for wet snow and worked extremely well with burly under the cuff gloves. The hood did not fit the best over a ski helmet though. It did not completely the helmet and left part of my face exposed due to that. Other than the face exposure, the shell was remarkable in adverse wind (50-70 mph on exposed ridge lines). All in all, this is a very versatile shell that is very lightweight, strong and gets the job done. If you are looking for a resort jacket, this is not it, but if you want to make one purchase that can cover many activities with above average performance, this is your shell.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great light weight jacket I needed a lightweight waterproof jacket and found the Helio to exceed my expectations. It's lightweight and stores easily. The pocket are ample and the access to venting zippers is easy. I normally would fit a large but according to other reviews and the website video the medium is perfect, I'm 6' and 170lb.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very light weight Just purchased this jacket last month to replace my old Loki Jacket for the back country skiing The Jacket does not have much weight , makes it nice for a pack jacket. Look to Loveland Ski Area and Brave the subzero wind day while up there . Jacket worked great . This is a go to for back country trips .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light, Simple, Strong I've been very impressed with the Helio Shell. It is extremely light for being three-layers and C-Knit is significantly quieter and softer to the touch than pro. It has performed extremely well as a ski shell, and as a four season rain-shell. BD never disappoints!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Jacket! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Black Diamond Helio shell fits well and keeps the water out. Exactly what a Gore-Tex jacket should be. I like the casual blue color as I don’t like walking through town with high viz mountain colors.
