Product Reviews
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good jacket with basic flaw [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I like this jacket in general, especially like the color (deep rust), and the value is good. But one fundamental flaw that keeps me from recommending it is the fact that the sleeves are not lined. Because of the texture of the jacket's shell material, unless you are wearing a shirt with tight sleeves or made of very smooth material, you cannot simply slip the jacket on. You have to hold your shirt cuff in your hand to keep your shirtsleeve from catching in the jacket sleeve and bunching up. As a longtime Columbia customer, I am surprised at this design choice.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Soft Shell, Minor Issues Bought this jacket for the shoulder seasons. Have used it for about three weeks and it functions as expected. No real cold weather yet this season, so can't evaluate against that yet. Materials and workmanship are excellent. I have two minor issues. First, I would prefer the jacket were just a little shorter in vertical length. An inch or two shorter and it would sit below the waist instead of at the hips. That may not be a problem for taller guys though. Second, for the love of all that is sacred, include an inside pocket!! How hard is that? The outside pocket is fine, but does not work for multiple items (i.e. phone and wallet). Better yet, TWO inside pockets.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fit and Color Purchased this jacket to wear with my work uniform. The Buffalo color matches my brown work pants pretty well. Looks great in casual attire (jeans and khakis) as well. As I'm 6 feet tall and broad shouldered, I'd prefer to have a 3XL. However, the 2XL fit seems just about perfect for uniform wear. My only complaint about the fit, other than the lack of a 3XL, is the sleeves. The length is fine, but they seem tight. I don't have Popeye'esque forearms or overly large biceps, but Columbia Softshell jackets always seem to have tighter sleeves than other brands. It's not uncomfortable, but doesn't leave a lot of room for other layers.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from All good besides the sleves I had a comparable jacket of Columbia for years and it was my favorite. Somehow I lost it last year so I replaced it this year with what looked to be the same. 90% of the jacket is the same but now the arms are fleece lined and I HATE that feature. It grabs on any long sleeve shirt you are wearing when you put the coat on and the static when you take it off could power a small village. Bums me out every day as it is still the coat I'm going to wear 80% of the time but the sleeves drive me nuts. Don't really like the adjustable closures at the sleeve ends either but I'll just have to toughen up I guess.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Confort and versatility for a tall man I'm 6'4" and have 37.5" arms with a 45" chest. Buying any coat or long-sleeve shirt that fits is difficult, if not impossible. I purchased the Ascender in Mens LT, and I could not be more pleased. The fit is athletic in the chest and through the waist, but wears easily with a hoodie underneath. Range of motion is surprisingly good for a jacket, not something I was necessarily expecting. I've only had the Ascender for about a month so I could not give 5 stars for quality as only time will tell - but the materials and stitching seem to be up to snuff. Thank you Columbia for your line of tall mens clothing.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Jacket, Not Enough Info In The Description [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love Columbia products, and this jacket works so well for my guy. He’s 6’9”, and nothing fits him. This jacket was perfect. I don’t know if it just did it to me, but I ordered the jacket in the dark mountain color, which is awesome, except there was only a picture of the back of the jacket. When I got it, the jacket was the perfect color but all of the detailing on the front was red. I wouldn’t have picked that color had I known that, I would’ve definitely still went with this jacket and this brand, just a different color. So a different picture would have been nice so I wouldn’t have to deal with the exchanging of the product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disapointed in Ascender Soft Shell for the 1st time in years [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have enjoyed Columbia jackets for over a decade and been impressed by their quality. I am saddened that I must warn fellow consumers about the shockingly poor quality of the Columbia Men’s Ascender™ Softshell Jacket. The 2017 version has an inferior main zipper that pulls apart at the slightest pressure. I am stunned that the designers of the 2017 version of the softshell jacket wouldn't see this if they tested this. I am returning the two softshell jackets I just bought. I can understand looking for ways to reduce cost of production, but this should not be done at the expense of quality. Columbia:please bring back the 2015 zipper design for your future versions of your softshell jackets even if the jacket costs more!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Jacket I have ever Owned Resilient, comfortable and very well manufactured. What I especially like are the sizes of the pockets. More specifically, the volume is large, but the directional placements of these pockets mean that when full they fall into a placement that is very comfortable and promotes movement. Within several days of owning this jacket, a steady downpour occurred during an office excursion to lunch. It kept me very warm and the moisture did not penetrate the shell- very happy. Other things I may say- it runs on the small side in terms of shoulder and armpits. An XL fits comfortably, however, the arm length and waist length is longer than I would like it to be.

Is it machine washable and dryable? Does it wear well with repeated washes? Does the fabric pill?

Asked by: Julias2coolia
Hey there, Thanks for the question. Columbia recommends that this be washed with cold water on the delicate or hand wash cycle. They do not recommend machine drying it and suggest that you hang dry or dry flat in areas with plenty of ventilation. We have not received any reports of this product having widespread issues with repeated washes or pilling. That being said, to avoid friction and pilling, when washing, you should ensure all hook and loop (velcro) are closed. Excessive washing causes clothing to wear out faster, so wearing a garment multiple times before washing extends the life of the garment
