The La Sportiva Men's Mutant Shoe is a trail running shoe for technical mountainous routes. FriXion XF ultra grippy rubber to prevent slipping on wet rock, plus lugs that will dig into mud. The midsole cushions and stabilizes underfoot and up top the breathable mesh keeps the foot cool. It's also abrasion-resistant with an integrated gaiter, so rocks and dirt won't cause you to turn around on the trail early.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fit like a glove and tons of traction. I have been running in La Sportivas for about 4 years now and this is definitely one of my favorites. Along with the Akashas this would be my pick for running on any technical trail where I want my shoes to be grippy, protective, and feel like an extension of my foot. The lacing system on the Mutants is what really separates them from the other sportivas I have had. It fits really snug and feel great on your foot. The trails around where I live in CO are technical and still fairly snow covered and these shoes do great on those conditions. Really looking forward to the seasons ahead with these shoes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EPIC! These shoes rock! I have had them for the 9 months or so and they perform great! I can push 10+ mile days in the mountains on terrain up to class 3 and have very happy feet at the end of the day. They are not as stiff as the La Sportiva Ultra Raptors, but they are lighter. All at the same time they have great rigidness to take very rocky trails with ease. These are not as light as the Bushido’s but they are stiffer and able to take rough trails longer before feet get upset. If you want a stiffer trail runner and want to hit class 4 and minor class 5 terrain with super long hiking approaches on super rocky trail the Ultra Raptor is your shoe. If you want to stack super long mile days with class 3 and under with rocky trail the Mutant is your shoe. If you want a bomb super light trail runner and occasional peak the Bushido is your shoe. Hope this helps you find the difference in a few superb shoes. La Sportiva for life!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ideal mountain running shoe This is the ideal shoe for technical mountain running. The fit is comfortable yet precise allowing for confident footing even on steep, off camber and rocky downhills, and the tread/sole has minimal slippage on a variety of surfaces both wet and dry. I have used them extensively on more traditional and smooth running trails in the Sierras, as well as on more technical hybrid running/climbing/mountaineering adventures in the high Sierra and the shoe performs well in both areas. Additionally, I have used them in 200+ mile mountain races in Europe and they kept my feet comfortable and confident in the steep trails in the Alps and don't seem to break down/compress even after multiple days and nights of continuous running.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from G.O.A.T. This is THE shoe I reach for when I'm doing my long distance sufferfests. I've done huge mountain peak linkups feature technical scrambling and long, off-trail approaches. Mutant features my all-time favorite lug pattern on its outsole that seems to stick onto just about anything from muddy trails, scree, or slabby climbing. This is the one ALL-mountain running shoe to rule them all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome shoes I love these shoes, they have a good drop for me and work in running conditions across the board. I bought them to be a solid trail shoe but they’re so comfortable I end up wearing them all the time, even for trips around town. Two issues though, the toe cap did start to peel off pretty quick, but I got some shoe goo and restuck it and now they’re good as new, also the fabric on the back heal loop Ripped when shoving my foot in one day but that was probably my fault. Seriously though I’ll buy another pair after these even with those issues!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The "almost" perfect offtrail shoes [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is my 5th pair of La Sportiva Mutants. I'm an adventure runner and I use those in long distance outings ranging from 30 to 70 miles. I wouldn't recommend the Mutants for "true running", I use lower profile shoes for true running outings. However, when it comes to off-trail travel, fast hiking, bushwhacking, and rock scrambling...the Mutants outperform the competition. These shoes give the secure fit needed to go up and down scree/talus fields. The outsole sticks to rock amazingly, and it protects the feet against heavy brush when you need to step on and kick those Manzanita bushes. It also drains pretty well. Enjoy your Mutants!

I spend a lot of time on my feet at work on various terrains and conditions.The shoe is extremely comfortable and durable. Not to mention how lightweight this shoe is. I plead with La Sportiva to never discontinue this shoe. I will buy these as long as they are around.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile and Rugged The Mutant has been the shoe that I can do everything in. If I can only take one pair of shoes on a trip, this is them! Good cushioning, great traction, good support, and comfortable upper. Following many years of trail running in the old La Sportiva CrossLites, I was worried when the CrossLite was discontinued, but found that the Mutant was definitely a superior replacement. I recently ran across the Akshayuk Pass on Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic that included running across rugged terrain with river crossings, ice, snow, marshy bogs, scree and glacial moraine. The Mutant exceeded my expectations in these harsh elements, where I don’t think any other single pair of shoes could. Derrick La Sportiva Running Ambassador
