Rated 1 out of 5 by from Update to previous review re ventilation On a recent trip I used two different flys and compared the ventilation. Nighttime temperature was about 70 and very high humidity---the kind of night when you need good ventilation. On the first night I used the standard Colfax fly and I opened all the windows and the door. Great! But then it started to rain and I had to close them. Ugh! Like a sauna. On the next night I put on a fly from the Kelty Trail Ridge 3. I immediately noticed how much more air flow there is with a regular tent fly. First you have open mesh on all four sides. Second, the vestibules are pulled way out on two sides and the other two sides of the fly are staked far out with a cord, opening up large spaces under the fly on all four sides. The Colfax fly just can't compete with this. It gives an illusion of ventilation with the window flaps, but the illusion dissolves the first time it rains and you have to close the flaps. To date not a single review of the Colfax anywhere on line has mentioned using the Colfax fly as a shade canopy. That means people aren't using it for that purpose, which defeats the reason for the partial as opposed to full fly. Add a full fly to the Colfax and you have a dynamite tent that is very spacious, very tall, and WATERPROOF.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not water proof. Puddles of water on the floor. Agree with the other reviewers. Great for night viewing of the stars, but inevitably, it's going to rain (even for us desert dwellers, i.e. monsoons...) and you need a waterproof tent. We basically got soaked and had to sleep in the car. Hoping to return this tent to REI.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not even slightly water resistant Unless you live in a desert, this is a terrible design. There’s no way that the fly is going to protect you from the rain. After watching the video here showing rain dripping down the loops that hold the window panels I heavily coated all 6 loops with silicone spray. That helped 5 out of 6 of the loops. One still leaked. More alarming were (1) the large pools of water at the bottom of each corner (I assume it leaked through the seams) and (2) the wet inside surface of the window flaps. This was after a moderate two-hour rain with no wind. Imagine what’s going to happen when the wind picks up. The zip-off vestibule is inconvenient. It’s not that easy to zip it to the tent body. If you want privacy you have to have the vestibule, since there’s no flap covering the front door, so what’s the point of having a zip-off vestibule, which only gives water other places to enter (around the long zipper)? The window flaps are a good idea in cold weather, but the lack of a flap to cover the door defeats that idea. I also think it’s a good idea to brainstorm new ways to provide more ventilation than is offered by most flys, which can create a stifling interior in hot, humid weather. But this tent is not the solution to that problem because by definition a tent that “shelters” is a fully waterproof tent. Hot and humid = late-afternoon thunderstorms in most of the US. Really, really bad design, Marmot. I predict that this tent won’t see a second year on the market. Way to go with the 49” height, square sides, and massive head room, though. Now all you need is a plain old waterproof fly.
