Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super warm without the bulk This jacket is incredibly warm, I am really happy with this purchase. I walk about one mile to work each way in Chicago and have been wearing this jacket with no more than a button down and sweater underneath and have not been cold at all, with temps as low as the teens plus wind. It is pretty snug fitting which I like too. As a reference point on warmth, I also own a Quasar Nova jacket and I would say that jacket is slightly warmer, but as expected because the Quasar Nova has 800-fill down whereas this Featherless jacket is rated to be similar to 700-fill down. Just a note, if you're shorter, like me (5' 6"), the jacket may be a little long- but no more so than any other Marmot jacket have and really no big deal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Toasty synthetic warmth for mountain adventures! I tested the Avant exclusively in my home state of Colorado up to elevations near 13,000 ft. in a range of weather from -5℉ (-20.6℃) and dumping snow to sunny and 55 ℉(12.8℃). During that time I really came to love the puffy for its warmth, durability, and ability to excel on each of my adventures. On hut trips I typically head out into the night with a big puffy jacket and pants to photograph starry skies over the cabin but on both of these trips I substituted larger puffy for the mid-weight Avant. Filled with synthetic insulation the equivalent to 700 fill power down it kept out the cold nicely while standing still at 5℉ (-15℃) when worn with puffy pants, below that temperature I started to feel the cold unless I got moving to generate more heat. While skiing a full day at Copper Mountain I was almost perfect from the cold snowy morning to the sunny blue-bird afternoon; I briefly got hot when working harder in steep moguls and north facing back bowls. It's definitely too warm for me to wear when skinning uphill, but I'm usually only wearing a thin shell or base-layer at that point. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice coat. Different fit Been wearing about a month now and am happy with warmth. The arms/chest area seem tight compared to MH, TNF and Patagonia. Also wish there was a drawstring for the hood. It is a warm coat and I like the color green marmot uses. If you have a large upper body you may want to size up. I am 6’ 193 and large is usually a good fit.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Almost perfect Great fit, feels like down, warm for it's weight, packs down pretty good. But why no draw cord for the hood! The hood can not be cinched up around your face, which is a real downside when it's windy. I got this jacket well discounted, so it was worth it, but I wouldn't pay full price because of the hood design.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not worth the price The hoody doesn't have the quality I was expecting for $225. When folded it doesn't return to its original shape when you wear it. The fold lines are still visible weeks after.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice I like these featherless jackets from Marmot, I own the Alassian featherless jacket and wear it regularly. They are mid-weight pieces good down to 15F or something like that. The Avant is even better with lower temps because of the hood. I would not rate it below 15F just does better in that range with a hood. I returned mine because in the end I found I did not like the look of the narrow horizontal tubes. This design has become popular over the years, but it was the first like it that I have owned. I like the wider more traditional size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All Around Great Layer I’ll make this easy, the Avant is an ultralight weight toasty well fitting layer. Last night was very CHILLY on the mountain skiing- about 6F without windchill factor and I stayed toasty warm with a thermal weight long sleeve and an ultralight wind layer on top. The cut is fitted an moves nicely - ok - I laughed at the “angel wing” discussion on the product videos but darn if the Avant doesn’t really move with you whether your Boarding, Skiing, or Fatbiking. Nice addition whether alone or paired with the Minimalist. Love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Kept me warm during Ice climbing trip I purchased this jacket for an ice climbing trip I took with some friends from college. During the trip, while wearing a mid to heavy weight base layer, it kept me warm from temperatures ranging from 30F to 10F with wind. When standing still at lower temperatures, I became a bit cold, but when active, this jacket performs very well. I am 5’ 10”, weighing 150 lbs and this jacket fits perfectly (small size). The low weight of this jacket was a plus too, considering how warm it is when you are active.

Is this jacket waterproof?

Asked by: Justwondering
Hey there, Thanks for the question. This jacket has a bit of water resistance but it is not waterproof.
