The Marmot Women's Long Avant Featherless Hoody is an insulated jacket for winter weather. It may look like a down jacket, but these thin baffles are stuffed with 3M Thinsulate Featherless insulation instead. It acts like down, as it's incredibly lightweight and warm, but it's not, plus it gives the added bonus of warming when wet. The length offers enough coverage for the city, whether you're doing some serious shopping or just headed to work.
Products on Sale are Discontinued Styles or Colors.

Warm and lightweightAs someone who's allergic to down but hates being cold, it's extremely difficult to find quality, warm, weatherproof coats that use synthetic/alternative materials. This coat fits the bill! It's warm, lightweight and has great coverage (hood + length). I'm only 5' and this coat goes to my knees, which keeps my lower body just as warm as my torso. There's also extra room to layer up underneath, if necessary. My only minor complaints are that the hood doesn't cinch, so you can't tighten it around your face, and that there's no tag loop to hook it up (you just have to use the hood). Otherwise, it's a great coat that I hope to use for many winters to come.

Weird fitBought this in same size as previous similar style marmot coat and this was HUGE! Sleeves super wide I can fit two arms in one sleeve, crazy weird. Then in BELLS out at the hips, I could hide a five pound ham on each side and you would never know it’s that huge of a bell out. Looks like a strange futuristic ballet dress costume with the huge arms and exaggerated flare out, wonder if they hired a new designer who totally doesn’t get how to fit women’s body.

Finicky Zipper, but otherwise a Great Coat!I love several things about this coat. It’s warm, it repels rain, the hood is big enough and actually stays on when it’s windy, the length is perfect, and it’s light. Also, it works for both casual and nicer outfits, and has a non-bulky slim fit. I’m 5’6”, 135lbs, and the medium fits well.
On the down side: The zipper is fussy and usually takes me a couple of careful tries before it’ll zip up properly. It’s also slightly noisy, as if there is a rustling sound when I move (probably not noticed by anyone near me, but I’ve noticed it).

So big!I normally wear a S or XS in Marmot, and I typically love their products for warmth and quality. I ordered a small in this so I'd be sure to have room to wear a sweater underneath in the winter. It is HUGE: I can hold out the coat about a foot from my body at the waist, and it flares sideways way below the hips like a bell, so I don't think it would be very warm because it would let so much air in. I have an athletic/slim build and I'm 5'6" and 130 lbs, so this size should have been right on. The product description photos show the coat falling relatively straight down, but this is misleading. I'm returning and buying a different brand. Photos attached show coat with my OLD size small (different brand) coat and a pair of size 6 jeans overlaid, for reference. The coat insulation does seem like it would be warm on the top at least, if the rest fit you!

Really happyI bought the jacket 10 months ago and have since moved to UK. Bought this jacket more as a back up for occasional use but ended up wearing it almost everyday and is warmer than my other down jackets ( eddie bauer and patagonia). Washes well , very lightweight and no issues of feathers leaking as is the case with most down jackets. Totally changed my perspective about buying jackets. Have been hooked to down jackets all along dealing with leaking feathers but this one has all qualities of a down jacket but warmer! Very pleased with my purchase.

Like Being Hugged by WarmthI bought this back in October, which happened to be great timing for the 5 feet of snow we got in Steamboat Springs, CO. The major benefit with the featherless down of this coat, is that it doesn't get wet very easily, and when it does, expect to stay just as warm! I've worn this in sleet while walking around town and was shocked at it's quality.
In regards to the fit, I ordered a size large. The fit is PERFECT; I rarely experience that with coats because I have sizable hips. In fact, I had always avoided buying a down coat because I haven't like the way they fit tight around my hips, but then would be too large in the arms and shoulders. This Avant Hoody is like a glove on my body.
My father is a bit of a gear head, and when I showed him my new coat, he ordered one for himself. He's been just as pleased with the men's version of this coat!.
When the weather started to warm up a bit, I was actually disappointed having to leave the house with a lighter coat than this one... I don't know how I've gone this far in my life without a coat like this. Bring on the Winter!

Chicago Gal from
Must have winter coat!So gorgeous!! I originally bought the green, which was a little too dark for my liking - it appears much darker in person than in the photo. However I absolutely adored the coat so I bought it in the blue, which is gorgeous in person. It's almost a bluish-ish purple-ish color.
As someone who can't wear down jackets (feather allergy), I was thrilled to finally find a featherless coat that was actually warm, long, and incredibly lightweight. It looks good too! If you're like me and you are searching for a warm cozy and super cute warm, winter jacket, this one's it. I live in Chicago where it is wet, windy and beyond freezing through the winter and this is the first coat that actually keeps me warm!!

Warm, light, cozyI never thought I needed a long insulated jacket, but I love the Avant hoody. I end up wearing it most when driving to/from the trailhead to run early in the morning when the air and the car (especially the seat!) are cold. I love putting it back on afterwards to warm up for the trip home. I also wear it constantly for morning dog walks or hikes, it's perfect for slower movement on cold mornings. The hood, sleeves, and pockets are nice - ample room to move or wear a thicker layer underneath, but not too baggy or bulky. Such a great jacket for everyday use.
Would a small fit a person who is 5’? Bought a Marmot short jacket and the S was too tight under the arms.

Thanks for the question. Without more sizing information, we would not be able to give an informed recommendation. Our best suggestion would be to check your individual measurements against Marmot's size guide to ensure the best possible fit. This jacket runs mostly true to size but is snug in the armpit and shoulder area, so if you've had issues in the past we would recommend potentially sizing up, though that may result in the jacket being a little too roomy in the torso.

Is this coat water proof or water repelent?
Asked by: Vane
Hey Vane, thanks for the question! According to our friends over at Marmot, this coat is somewhat water repellent but not waterproof. I hope this helps!
