Product Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top notch performance! I bought these snowshoes as a Christmas present to myself 3 years ago and use any possible excuse to go frolic in the snow with them. When all my winter-loving friends are slipping and sliding on the terrain, here I am galloping up and down mountains in anything from thick ice (thanks to a solid metal frame with teeth going around the entire thing), the feel of the ""teeth"" digging straight into the surface making me giggle with pleasure, to fluffy powder up to my waist. I feel like I will be keeping these babies for years to come, and, based on past happy reviewers, won't be surprised if I'm still strapping them on (it takes seconds for that too!) in 20 years!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Out There MSR sets the standard in snowshoes. I stepped up to the Lightning when I wanted something a little bigger and I couldn't be happier with them. We live in the mountains and snowshoes are an integral part of our kit (they don't leave my car all winter). My favourite thing about these snowshoes is the bindings. The pin system with the integrated crampon means they don't flop around. You can fasten the straps quickly, even while wearing gloves. With the quality, robust design, and price, I can't see choosing a brand other than MSR for snowshoes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic performance Got tired of getting soaking wet every time I went out (other brand of snowshoe kicked snow up every step I took so I would be wet from backside all the way to foot). Tried the MSR Lightening Trail and WOW! Barely notice them on my feet, can walk with a normal gait, very good up and down in variety of terrain from steepish to rolling. Love how easy they are to put on and take off, really makes a difference with arthritic hands. Find they give good grip and support in icy conditions as well as provide enough float when breaking trail.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Might be good for someone, just not for me [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought these and the ascent snowshoes for my husband for a trip to Crater Lake in January. His shoes were fantastic, and mine not so much. They broke about 30 mins into snowshoeing, and we were backpacking overnight, so I had a broken shoe for the next 24 hrs. The shoes also just felt very awkward, and basic movements were not easy, to the point that I fell about 10 times (and my husband did not). I know they are the “women’s” version for a narrower gait, and maybe that had something to do with it. For reference, I am 5’ 7” 150 lbs, my pack was about 30 lbs, and we were in 6ft snowpack with about a foot of fresh powder. Maybe this shoe would work for someone else and in different circumstances, but not for me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good for specific conditions This is my second pair of MSR showshoes and while I find them excellent in deep snow and open terrain, for most other conditions I would recommend MSR's Evo snowshoe. I have the older versions with the 30 cm versions which I prefer to using tails.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great gear - all terrain I was lucky enough to receive these snowshoes as a tester for MSR. Canadian winter can be harsh. I used these snowshoes in very cold conditions (-40) and the bindings were still very malleable. The binding also kept my shoes very stable and front facing. I did not have to readjust my footing or the bindings at any point in time. The grip was great on steep climbs and ice covered ground. This model is built with a sturdy design; assume they will last for a while.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEST SNOWSHOES FOR MY SMALLER FRAME I'm a 5'4" woman, and these work beautifully with my smaller frame, which enables me to move more normally! More comfortable than any snowshoe I've ever tried. We live right outside Rocky Mountain National Park, and are outside most days, year round. So snowshoes are used often in winter and spring. I used to dread having to snowshoe instead of throwing on my micro-spikes, just for ease, but no more! Love these snowshoes!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great, Simple, Snowshoes I used these snowshoes twice. Once in Yosemite and more recently, in Mammoth where there was some deep, fresh powder. The shoes did awesome in the deep powder. In the really deep stuff, I sank a few inches, but my feet were easy to pull out. They provided awesome traction in the ice. Like other reviewers have commented on, the strap excess strap material slip out of the retention devices, but was not a huge issue.
