Product Reviews
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple Light Weight Pack I use this pack mostly for ski touring. It fits all my gear well and has the separate pocket for my backcountry tools. This pocket is a little shallow for long shovel handles, but it still works well. The suspension system has a lot of room for adjustment. I had purchased several packs, however my longer torso (~22") didn't fit other well. This pack has plenty of adjustment. It is also very simple but large enough for all my layers, helmet, skins, food and water. An entry system that accessed the bottom of the bag (maybe a single vertical zip near the bottom on one side) would be helpful, but is large enough usually to reach down to the bottom without having to take everything out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Ice and Mountain Pack Super rad pack! Haven't heard much of mystery ranch but decided to buy this bag after looking into the company's reputation. Turned out to be the best climbing pack I've ever owned! Super comfy and can hold a ton of weight. Also super durable for its weight, I've beat this bag up and have yet to damage the fabric. I ice climb and mountaineer with it and their ice axe/tool attachment system works perfect, no complaints. All said super impressed with the bag, if you're looking for a durable alpine pack I highly recommend the Scepter.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quality pack! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Let me just start off by saying that I’m a big fan of Mystery Ranch packs, they’re kinda the new kid on the block when it comes to civilian gear but they’re doing a great job! Bought this Scepter 50 for thru hiking and mountaineering, after having in the back country I can say it’s true to its word on being durable. It is lightweight, but the guys at MR could do a better job there and change out the side strap buckles from its heavy aluminum to plastic, after all the main stay straps are plastic. I also think the shoulder straps could be a little more heavy duty like their military packs are, but this is a light pack. Overall a great bag!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Scepter 50 I am replacing a Dana designs Sphinx that is over 20 years old and has crossed the world. with me many times. I am very satisfied with the initial quality of the scepter 50. The only thing I don’t like is the slide on clips instead of traditional strap fasteners. I use the pack less than half full most if the time and traditional strap fasteners on the lid would be more secure. I tried to take the slide on clips off but the are stitched in. I’m thinking about taking the ones from my Sphinx.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Pack Another Mystery Ranch quality product, initial thought was uh-oh looks small, but I stuffed a big sleeping in it and was very happy. Lightweight and very comfortable for those off-trail 2-3 night trips.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My New Favorite Pack This is my second Mystery Ranch pack, so I had high hopes. This pack exceeded all my expectations. It is well thought out, versatile, and built with quality materials throughout. It has the durable ice tool holders/gear straps you would expect, but it adds the ability to quickly strip the pack down be slick on the outside for travel through snagged backcountry/crags. I was also impressed with how effectively the pack can be expanded or shrunk using the compression straps. Many large packs don’t efficiently shrink, leaving extraneous bulk/straps/nonsense flailing around on your back. This pack doesn’t. The strap/connection system also makes strapping down your rope a cinch, even at -10. By the way, the connection points are metal, so no worries about fragile plastic at low temps. When I purchased this pack I was worried it would be too big/bulky for shorter trips and I would have to buy a second, intermediate sized pack... no need it expands and shrinks like a champ. This pack is now my all around go to for any ice climbing trip.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thoroughly Impressed with this pack. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this pack to use for larger/longer backcountry ski/mountaineering trips and every time I use it I am happier that I went ahead with the purchase. Large enough to fully load up for a multi-day lean-to supported backcountry skiing trip yet can slim down for the summit push/skiing down when most of your equipment is worn. Because of the slim brain design, head movement is not impeded whatsoever when skiing or bootpacking up steep terrain. Has just enough features to get the job done for a minimal pack. I find myself reaching for this pack more often than the Osprey Kamber 32 I've been skiing with for years. My only concern is the robustness of the side compression straps when A-Frame carrying skis (as this isn't quite what these straps were designed for) but time will tell on that one. I contacted Mystery Ranch after using this pack to tell them they should advertise it as a ski mountaineering pack as much as an ice climbing pack because of just how impressed I am with this thing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality Ice Bag I purchased this bag a few months ago and was able to make full use of it when out on a trip to the San Juans. The bag held everything I needed it to (tools, rope, crampons, screws, draws, jackets, etc.) and had room for more as I was just doing out and backs. I would feel comfortable loading this down for a night, maybe two but it would definitely be pushing the limits of this bag's capacity. Some things I loved about the bag: Its super comfortable, if you've never worn a loaded down MR bag you need to, best backpacks in the world in my opinion. It packs well, and the exterior sleeve for wet stuff actually worked pretty well for my hard shell layers. Securing a rope was super easy, and the top of the pack was still somewhat accessible with the rope still on the bag. Some things I didn't love about the bag: The tips of my Reactors stuck out from the pack when attached to it and I had nightmares about tearing my puffy on them, I wish MR had done a full sleeve insert for picks like some other ice bags do. The "gear loop" that is advertised in some of MR's marketing vids is pretty useless in my opinion, and occasionally a draw or bit of cordelette or something would get hung up on it while stuff it into the bowels of the bag. Overall, I LOVE this bag! Super durable, very packable, and super adjustable. If you're worried that the 50 may be to big for like 90% of your use cases but you really like the idea of having more room when you need it for the other 10% I wouldn't fret too much. I had this bag packed to the gills and I had it with like two jackets and a snickers bar and the thing still cinched down nicely and was firm against my back. Buy this bag, you won't regret it.

Getting Your Size
Waist Circumference: Measure around your waist just above the top of your hip bones (roughly two fingers below your belly button).
Torso: Use a tailors tape measure or string and have a friend measure between the bony bump at the base of your neck (C7 vertebra) to the spot on your spine that is just behind your belly button.

In Between Sizes?
If you are between sizes on the waist belt, Mystery Ranch recommends you size down. If you are between sizes on the yoke or if your measurements fall outside standard sizing, please contact Mystery Ranch Customer Service.
