Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect winter hat I bought this hat as a gift for my brother (avid snowboarder and walker of his dig in the winter). He is beyond thrilled with it! The quality is outstanding and the fur -- super soft. I think it is thin enough to fit under his helmet for snowboarding. And the mouth cover easily folds into a small side pocket that zips up! It's also water proof so great for walking the dog during cold rainy days. I am so impressed with this hat that I'm buying one for myself. ,,,,You know when you get someone a gift and they are happy, really happy, not just the smile and say thanks happy? Well that's what you will experience if you buy this hat for someone.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great hat if you hack it yourself! I work as a Polar Expedition Guide and got this hat for work, especially in Antarctica. I LOVED the hat but HATED the velcro on the chin straps! I use this hat with the OR SONIC BALACLAVA for bomb-proof polar protection of my head and neck. I only problem I had was that the chin straps were not long enough and the velcro was not strong enough! I notified OR about this hoping that a change would be made on future designs but unfortunately the design was left the same. I did not want to return my hat so removed the OR velcro from the chin straps, bought some stronger velcro and had it sewn to the straps! Now it works great and even Antarctic katabatibc winds can't rip it off my head!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The perfect winter hat? Fits very well (sizing chart accurate), warm, very light, water resistant, windproof, breathable. Works well in heavy snow, heavy rain (it fits very well under a hood). The peak blocks rain, snow and the sun when lowered. It also blocks the reflections from snow because of the dark colour of the peak's underside. ,,,,I would recommend that if you will be in extremely cold temperatures (minus 20 and lower), that you size up to allow for a balaclava and/or thin beanie to go underneath to add even more warmth. The drawcord at the back can then be pulled tight in the warmer months.,,,,The hat also looks pretty cool so can be worn in the city no problem.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Velcro won't stick I originally bought the OR Frostline Hat for a snowshoe trip to Yellowstone in January 2019 and recently took it on a December Himalayan trek. The ear flap Velcro stopped working near the end of the Yellowstone trip and the mouth/nose flap Velcro wouldn't stick on the first use in Nepal. Adding to the ear flap Velcro problem, the flaps are too short and barely overlap on top of the head when in the "up" Velcro position. The cap is too small for the labeled size and measurements. With ear flaps up, the cap does not cover the ears at all. The Velcro material (likely a generic) is not the traditional "hook and loop" but a hook and roughened plastic. The "hooks" won't stick to the plastic, but will stick to any high collars on jackets/sweaters/ shirts.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good hat, needs improvement I received this hat last year for Christmas ('12). It was something I had researched ahead of time and had requested specifically. It is a great hat. It stops the wind, keeps my ears warm, repels moisture, has an excellent facemask (could be a little bigger), and is lightweight. I think this is a great hat. But, I have to give it 2 stars because the velcro that keeps the hat closed under your chin is worthless. It started to not hold only after a few weeks of usage, and now, a year later, it wont stay in place if there is a strong wind. I have a number of OR products and I am very satisfied with them, but this one isnt worth the $$ unless they change the velcro or put a snap on the strap.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm within Limits This hat is warmer than expected given its light insulation. I spent a week with it recently in Michigan's Upper Peninsula forests. In 20F temperatures when moving it was warm. As would be expected, not moving in 20F it was acceptable but only moderately warm and less so with wind. In the teens it was ok while moving but not warm enough when sedentary. I also took my wool shearling leather ushanka that was, as expected, warmer than the Frostline in wind and lower temps. The Frostline's face mask is a great feature especially in wind. (However I prefer a fleece neck gaiter.) A very good feature is its packability and light weight. In changing weather conditions this would be a great hat to bring along.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice hat! Very warm, very comfortable, does well shedding moisture, the hidden face mask is a nice touch, although a little narrow to cover from chin to nose, but not a problem based on different opinions I'm sure. Only knock I would give is the Pertex / fleece doesn't wick moisture under heavy activity levels. Again, if you're buying this hat for it's intended purpose (warmth & stopping precipitation) it excels.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My second one Lost my first one. Had to get another. Great for frigid weather where you need a Swiss Army knife hat. Too sunny? Drop the brim. Ears cold? Bring down the ear flaps. Freezing air? Unfold the face mask. It isn't exactly a sexy hat- but if you need function over style this is awesome.
