Collar doesn't close up/seal very well.....[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Me: 5' 10". 46 inch chest. Broad shoulders. Muscular upper body but not Muscle & Fitness magazine type!
Review Type And Why: Fit review only. Will be returning due to fit issues.
Size bought: XL
When: October 2020
Fit Over Cotton XL T-shirt: The Interstellar fits like an expensively tailored dress shirt. No binding when crossing arms over chest or lifting arms up. Arm holes properly high but also not binding. This was a great fit for a dress shirt but I was concerned it'd be too snug over a base or light mid-layer. It was.
Fit Over XL Patagonia R1: This Patty R1 is the older style, with grid pattern all the way to bottom hem. It's in almost new shape. The Interstellar fit slightly snug across chest, over the R1. The Interstellar material was slightly stretched. After 25 minutes of wear at home, typing online, making coffee, folding a few clothes, I felt constricted and uncomfortable across the chest. And, the higher arm holes of the Interstellar became more uncomfortable as time went on in the 25 minute period. Could not imagine wearing the Interstellar over the R1 for hours.
Conclusion On Fit, For My Body Type: The Interstellar would only work for a spring or summer rain shell over nothing thicker than short or long sleeved T-shirt or similar top. HOWEVER....there's a problem, Houston.
Neck Closure: Poor. Wearing just a cotton T-shirt under the Interstellar and a ball cap, the Interstellar hood sealed okay, but not great, from about the middle of my ears to top of forehead. Pulling even more on the two shock cords (on sides of hood) only brought the visor farther down towards my ball cap brim, but didn't seal the hood closer against my cheeks. Still, this would be an acceptable trade off for the (reported) excellent breathability of the Interstellar.
From abut the bottom of my ears down to the top of Interstellar collar, the collar didn't close up to my chin or neck. It stayed about 5 inches! from my neck, just below my chin. The entire loop of the jacket, ear to ear around the chin/neck. is loose. In any kind of rain water will literally pour into this cavernous area.
The neck is simply cut way too big for an XL jacket that's supposed to keep you dry. There's no way to make the jacket seal, or even come close to sealing, around the neck. This is a fatal flaw, for me.
I'm returning this first thing Monday morning 11/2.
Compared To Rab Latok: I have an original Event fabric Rab Latok in excellent condition. It's XXL, because the English XL is like a corset under the arm holes. The Rab XXL seals up tightly to right under my nose. Keep in mind, this is an XXL. It's body is 6" wider than the Interstellar (both garments laid flat and measured against each other). And yet the neck on this XXL still seals my face effectively from the rain.
Love the Event fabric. Can almost feel it breath when working up a little sweat. That's why I bought the Interstellar. As I understand it, Ascent is OR's name for Event.
