Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Rain Hat I bought this hat because I guide cold environments with lots of sun and areas that receive enough rain to be considered rain forests. I received the hat before being in the field for almost 20 days. During that time it rained all but 3 days Many times I didn't need to pull out my rain jacket because the hat was doing it's job keeping the rain off my shoulders and out of my face. I slept in the hat under m y tarp, it kept mosquito netting off my face and my head warm. It;s been dropped in the mud, tied to a harness, stuffed in a pack and strapped to handlebars. The hat is still in perfect shape begging for more abuse......it's gonna get it too.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not good for kayaking I don't get why people like this hat. Yes, it does keep you dry but any wind over 5 mph and the brim is folding up letting the rain or sun into your eyes and face. I also wanted to use the hat kayaking. Well the interior layer that overheats your head in the summer but keeps you warm in the winter soaks up the water like a sponge that drips down on your face after you do a roll. Nice if it is a warm day with fresh water but in the ocean it is an annoying dripping of salt into your eyes. It does pack nice into any sack. It would be helpful if OR put a stiff plastic interior brim into the front to keep it from flipping up in the 5 mph wind.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Brim is too flexible. Any wind will fip it up. I lost my old seattle sombero at which was great because it had a stiff brim so I bought another thinking I was getting the same hat. Unfortunately, OR decided to take out the brim stiffening material (presumably to save money and increase profit margin) and now its basically useless as a rain hat or a sun hat. Whenever the wind blows, which is most of the time when you're hiking outdoors, even the slightest breeze will cause the brim to flip up and exposure your face to sun/rain. So i find it basically useless in any outdoor condition due to it not being windproof and a complete waste of money.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good rain protection The product is fantastic at defeating rain without wearing a hood. Love it for hunting so I can hear and maintain better situational awareness. On this sombrero there is a sewn in fleece liner in the bucket. Nice feature but it is only attached at the mouth of the bucket. It allows the shell of the hat to move freely from the fleece liner that is attached to your head. In the wind this causes the hat to move independently from the secure connection that the liner provides. Perhaps some adhesive deeper in the bucket would fix this without compromising the gore tex membrane.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Still good, but a little disappointing I bought my first Seattle Sombereo ~15 years ago, and functionally, it's still going strong. However, after prolonged salt water use and a couple of run-ins with red clay, it's a little stained, so I decided it was time for a new one. When the new one arrived, I was disappointed to see there was no size adjustment band inside like my old one had and that the hat was slightly taller (now it pushes my ears down). I plan to keep the hat as it's still much better than the alternatives, but I wish OR would revert to the older style/features.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Useless in breeze or light wind Wanted this for rain and sun protection. The brim flips up in the direction of the prevailing wind. More than 5mph of wind will cause this problem. Rain usually comes with some wind, and then you will have a wet face or neck. In principle, a light, packable hat with a wide brim is a great idea. But the brim is far too flexible and you will spend a breezy day pulling it down

Rated 5 out of 5 by from True to reputation This hat is a tried and true champion of gear. Truly waterproof I have had it in all kinds of rain, snow, and sleet, the inside stays bone dry. My first impression when I put it on was the inner lining was super comfortable and the fit was exactly as listed online. I can see what some people are saying about it being warm in summer but I'm wearing it in December in Northern BC at -16 C wit her a light touque under it. My only audition I would add is a Rhe ability to have the back held up for when your driving or wearing a pack and a pocket for the string when you don't need/want it. These are small personal choices so I can't fault the product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The legend of this hat is well earned. I use this hat pretty constantly. I finally bought one last year, with my REI dividend, after wanting one for so long. I have a tendency to beatdown gear so I remained somewhat cynical about my purchase. But it has being a beautiful peice of gear! It provides shade in the high country of NC and then quickly protects from a blinding thunderstorm. Thats when you got to go flaps down! And I noticed during a summer downpour my rainjacket, no matter how breathable, would still get sauna-like in the hood. But the Sombrero provides equal rain protection with more breathability. Finally, there is a size adjuster in the hat so fitting is a breeze!
