Misses the mark on two accounts.I really want to like this hat. All my OR gear is bomber. But, this hat misses the mark. As a hat itself, it is actually great...moves the overall score from a 2 to a 3. Good fit and nice dri-fit material. As a sun hat, the cape is unbelievably hot. I am in South Carolina and in summer humidity, it is an oven. It just locks in heat around your neck and lacks ventilation. The bill of the hat is also quite short and allows a fair amount of sun on your face. A bucket hat used in combination with a buff is far superior combination. The quality of the hat is great though.

A hat, you say?I am a self-professed gear freak. I own every commercially available brand of high-end outdoor gear, (except Mammut, and I'm still shopping for the perfect Mammut piece), and I have a lot of great kit. And I use it all. But I can say unequivocally, that this OR hat is the most versatile piece of gear I own. Rain or shine, hot or cold, with or without the Pharaoh neck attachment, it is literally the only piece of gear I own, that I use every single day. And I have done this for 5 years without the slightest problem. This is more than just a hat. It is protection for the part of my body that is exposed more than any other - my face. It works.

Only adequate for hairy headsI bought the OR Sun Runner and was really happy with it at first. It really protects the major part of my face from the sun, which is great and different from most other sun-protective headwear including wide-brimmed hats. However, the mesh-panels on the sides of the cap are basically "sunburn-portals". I have a slight receding hairline above the temples and with many caps, including this one, I get sunburned due to the side mesh-panels they feature. The same would happen for anyone with a short haircut. For a hat that is specifically supposed to provide bomb-proof sun protection, this is an absolute no-go! I'm really disappointed about this major design flaw, especially as I don't think the mesh-panels provide a lot of ventilation anyway. I would like to love the sun runner, but in its current state, it only works for hairy heads.

Great sunblockerPurchased my first one of these about 5 years ago when I was hiking the Camino de Santiago and knew the sun would be at my back for hours each day. It worked great for that purpose. I give it a "4 stars" for the following reasons. 1) it is not very stylish, 2) if the sun is low and in front of you, then it does not work as well as a full brimmed hat, if the wind is at your face, the apron flaps in the wind, and 3) the material is extremely light weight (good), but wore thin and developed holes / tears after a few years. Overall a good purchase . . . .as evidenced that I just purchased my second one this year.

This is the oneI run 25-30 miles a week outside in Los Angeles and have found this hat to be the greatest of its kind in avoiding sunburn. It fits securely, the materials are lightweight and soft against the skin. The coverage is a perfect shield against the sun. I feel as if I am under a shady canopy the whole time I'm wearing it, and my vision is not interfered with at all. It's quite nice to run in. The flaps don't get all soaked and sloppy either and theres a toggle on the straps to keep a sturdy locked in fit. I hope they never discontinue this style. Just don't be scared of how ugly it is.

The best hat I have ever owned.I have been wearing O.R. hats for years. I wear a XXL size hat and have never found another hat that fits and feels this good. The sunshade is detachable and works very well. It really protects the back of my neck while hiking. A favorite bite spot for flies etc. When I am really hot I sometimes run my hat under cold water, then wring it out and put it back on. It dries super fast. These days I fly r.c. helicopters so the Sunrunner hat comes in handy for sun protection. If you have a XXL hat size (or smaller) I think you will find the O.R. Sunrunner the best baseball style cap you have ever worn.

Not for CueballsLove the concept. Love the versatility. Be forewarned: I think this runs small. I'm a man with a small head and I'm halfway into the size small's range. Would be nice to have: A snap closure in front. The tied off cord makes this confusing to put on. Dealbreaker: I'm bald, a total cueball. The mesh panels make this hat a total non-starter, the sun just beats through it and sunburns your head anyway. They show the cape hiked up over the panels, but there's no keeping track of that in the field and it makes the cape length too short. OR: Make a non-mesh version! Or make a separate cape!

Great for bald guys above tree line, running, and yard workGreat for the bald guys above tree line, running, and around the yard. Rivets for the buttons rusted to the buttons pretty quick probably due to sweat and released from the brim. I will be buying one more but hope button design/ metal used will change in the future.
