The Smartwool Men's Merino 250 Baselayer 1/4 Zip Top is designed for temperature control and moisture management during cold weather activities. The 250-weight 100% Merino wool construction provides midweight warmth, natural odor-resistance, moisture-wicking performance, and soft-on-the-skin comfort. The shoulder panel design prevents chafing when wearing a pack, flatlock seams keep it from bunching when you're all layered up, and you can open up that quarter zip when things start to get a bit steamy.

Product Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't Change a Thing Plain and simple, if Smartwool ever changes a thing about these shirts, especially, the 100% Merino Wool fabric, I will discontinue buying Smartwool. These shirts are great in every way just as they are. I have been wearing the 250 weight for several years and they have performed extremely well. For 2017, I noticed that Smartwool has changed the wool fabric content on their 150 models. I will not purchase the new versions of the 150 weight shirts. I hope Smartwool reads this review and return to the 100% Merino Wool shirts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Product Recently took this on a 10 day vacation as my only "sweater." Wore almost every morning and night when it was cooler and it did not require a single wash. Smelled great upon returning to the US as well, after 10 days of wear and 2 10-hr flights. The wool's ability to regulate temperature was a life saver. The only complaint is that after 10 days of wear, the material was noticably "fuzzier" than before. It will remain to be seen how this holds up over time (this was a relaxing vacation and no excessive wear and tear occured). While it will still function, a fuzzy appearance may not let it tranistion to dressier occations or dinners out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Phenomenal! If I had to have 1 shirt. I needed a base layer for all kinds of activities this winter and, after my huge success with the 150 shirt, opted for this 250 base layer. This thing is great, I wear it until I can't anymore. It's dressy enough to wear as a regular ( functional ) shirt to work, restaurants, out n' about and it also is going to be my go-to shirt for colder backpacking or winter sports. If I had to have 1 long sleeve to survive the world, I'd choose this one. The only downsides I've found to It is that the shirts are a little bit long, so I'll roll up the bottom of the shirt to get it aligned with my torso ( I'm 5"10 ), and that the material started pilling minimally from the rolling within the first week.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most versatile piece of clothing I own This base layer made my winter runs much more comfortable. Combined with a light windbreaker, it keeps me warm at below-freezing temperatures. It is also great on its own in warmer weather, but what really surprised me is how well it works at high temperatures. I wore it while hiking a completely exposed trail on a clear sunny day with temperatures in the 80s. I did this because I didn't plan the trip well and expected to be punished for it. However, this base layer worked wonderfully. It is extremely breathable, which kept me dry throughout the hike. Plus it provided a great protection from sun. I had no idea that wool can be so versatile.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stands the test of time I've had two tops for over 2 years now. I wanted to write a review after a lot of use. They are both great. They are everything advertised: warm, don't itch, pliable, and don't acquire body odor (how is that even possible after high intensity days? It's a miracle, but it happens). I personally like the regular version more than the PhD (vents underarms) one, but they are both excellent. STILL very happy with this purchase 2 years later and counting! Not only would I recommend them to a friend, I've bought a bunch for our children and grandchildren.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent base layer/stand alone piece for every activity I bought this piece to wear under my hard shell while biking to work in sub-freezing temperatures. In that regard it excels as it keeps me much warmer than wearing several heavy layers while preventing overheating when I get going. Since purchasing I've also used it hiking up to 70 degrees (F) and relaxing around the house on chilly nights. For both uses it is quite comfortable and performs excellently. The fit is rather generous. I ordered a large initially (I'm 5'9" ~170lbs) but it is rather loose. Its still comfortable but not the greatest underneath tighter jackets as it bunches up. I've since ordered a medium and that is more of a tighter base layer like I was hoping the large would be. Just keep that in mind prior to purchasing. I cannot comment to the durability as I've only had it about 2 months. So far it just has minor pilling where the belt of my hiking backpack rubs my kidneys.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My third one, when there's new colors I'll get another! This is my third 250 1/4 zip and they're pretty much my favorite clothing item. Soft, comfortable and breathable, they are fantastic for layering in colder weather or wearing as a single layer on spring and fall days (I run cold and I'll wear this up to 70 degrees). I'm slim - 6'2", 165 lbs and have a hard time finding clothing that fits my long arms that isn't too big in the torso. The size medium fits me well in the arms and isn't baggy. I ordered my base layer SmartWool T's in a size small for a more second-skin fit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Get this now! This base layer is awesome! I'm 6'3", 205 lbs., with an athletic body type (not too bulky). I have a longer torso which puts me in that no man's land between large and XL. I hate when shirts or sweaters are too short where I have to keep yanking it down below my waist. This layer fits perfect and is true to size. No yanking necessary. If you're looking to layer a bunch underneath, I'd size up... But if you're looking for something to throw over a t-shirt or a thin long sleeve, go with your true size. Warm, soft, and fiancee thinks it's sexy! Get after it!
