Too tightI own probably 50 pairs of various smartwool socks. I love them. However last year they changed their material to include less wool and more nylon; therefore, they don't work as well for me at whisking away the moisture from my feet. I was excited to hear about this new indestructawool as nylon is not supposed to touch your skin but be the center of the sock. The sock seemed to work by keeping my feet dry but the sock is way too tight from the ankle up and I ordered the right size. I hope smartwool will take this feedback and loosen up the portion from the ankle up.

Great Big Smartwool Fan from
Wonderful Smartwool! These socks are so, so wonderful! I am cleaning out my sock drawer filled with socks that slouch, slide around, itch, pinch, and stay wet ... and filling it with Smartwool PhDs! I have narrow feet, and these socks stay in place perfectly, even as I'm chasing after my dog sideways across a steep hill! And when I wear my boots, they don't fall down at all! They're warm, incredibly soft, and super cute! And they dry quite quickly after a walk in the rain. I think these ones are perfect for cool fall temperatures in the 40s and 50s (and maybe the 60s, if your activity level isn't too high!). I wish everyone in the world could have such warm, dry, happy feet! Thanks, Smartwool!

Too tight, too sweaty, pills after first useI am very disappointed with these socks. I bought them for work after a recommendation from a coworker. I should have returned them after the first wear. They are extremely tight at the top band of the crew and I needed to fold them down after about 20 minutes because they were cutting off the circulation in my legs. I am very thin and do not have large calves. Also my feet were extremely sweaty wearing these indoors after about 4 hours and showed major pilling and wear of the fabric after the first wash. I washed these inside out using cool water and All Free and Clear detergent.

PhD Outdoor, BEST socks ever!!![This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've been wearing the PhD Outdoor sock since it first came to market. The light crew is perfect for everyday, especially nice in summer. I wear the medium or heavy for work/hiking/winter sport. Honestly, these are the only socks I own anymore. They hug the foot perfectly, never slip, manage sweat and therefore, stink and as far as an outdoor wool sock goes, they pack small enough to travel with a few extra pair. Only downside, they don't last forever but you'll stretch how long they last by not putting them in the dryer. Nowadays, I always hang dry.

Picky sock buyer from
Not what I expectedI bought this same sock in a different height and loved them, but for some reason these seemed different. The cushioning wasn't as thick as I anticipated, and my feet didn't stay warm when I "took them for a walk" on a winter day. I have a pair of these socks from a few years ago, and those seemed better as well.

Great Sock!I live in southern Arizona and love these socks for the winter. I have used them in temperatures between 20F and 60F. They are my favorite horseback riding socks in the winter. I do not have any problem with the fit that other reviewers have talked about.

MehI bought a variety of Smartwool socks this winter in different styles, textile blends and cushioning to wear with insulated snow boots and/or as bed socks. These are my least favorite. It seems a stretch to call these "Light" as the cushioning is really bulky compared to my other Light Cushion socks. They seem to run big as well. I wear an EU 41/US 10-10.5 and the L is not a great fit. They shift around inside my shoes and aren't particularly comfortable. Maybe they're great for other uses, but as an everyday winter sock they're not my favorite. I'm also not in love with the yarn blend or the utilitarian look. A lot of Smartwools are better-looking IRL than on-screen, but that's not the case with these. There's something about them that's a little depressing, TBH.

Horrible rashThese socks gave me a terrible rash around my ankles - the whole area of skin underneath the elastic band at the top of the sock. I own many pair of Smartwool socks, so I know the problem isn't with the wool. I also don't have any known allergies to anything. I don't know what they put in the elastic band of this particular style of sock. All the ones labeled "indestructawool technology" have a wider band at the top and it's also really constricting. The rash looks like hundreds of broken capillaries, is flat (not raised) and doesn't itch - it stings and is quite painful. The first hike I took wearing them, I wore them straight out of the package and so I thought maybe the resulting rash was from something at the factory. So I washed them and took a second hike two weeks later (it took a full week for the rash to go away) and the rash returned. I wore other socks on the hikes in-between and had no problem.
