DWR tech

Durable Water Repellent
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is a coating that is applied to fabrics which makes them water-resistant, or hydrophobic. A DWR finish doesn't interfere with breathability, which makes it perfect for adverse conditions in the backcountry.

Primaloft Black

PrimaLoft Black
PrimaLoft Black synthetic insulation offers just the essentials for your backcountry needs. It provides ample warmth with minimal bulk and maximum breathability, in an extremely compressible package.

The North Face DryVent

The North Face DryVent
Dryvent™ fabrics are engineered to be fully waterproof, windproof and breathable. The outer face of the textile is treated with a durable water repellant finish that helps form droplets and repel water from the surface. Each multi layered textile is engineered to allow water vapor to pass through from the inside to the outside.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Waterproof . . . NOT! Got this jacket for a 3-week, October/November trip to misty moisty Ireland. I wanted to be ready for the weather. Did not see outright rain in Ireland, but did have days of heavy mist/drizzle. Very disappointed to find that this jacket soaks up water, especially around the cuff tapes, the pocket bottom seams, and the hood. Also the jacket is not vented and does not "breathe," so with any exertion it turns into a sweat bag, the kind people wear to the gym to lose weight. Main zipper is very lightweight and does not open from the bottom. On the positive side, it is windproof and toasty warm (when not wet).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Yes The quality of the product is very good. Seams, zipper stitching, all are as expected. I do add a little nylon to the zipper to make it easier to open and close with gloves on. Wish they thought about that but that's nitpicking. For a 3-1 this jacket is heavy. I have pulled out the liner and just worn a thin hoodie under it to keep from melting in it. It's definitely ready for freezing weather. Rain, sleet, and snow will not soak in anywhere. It'll meet your expectations but if you're not using it for freezing environments or just spring skiing/boarding I'd look somewhere else. There is too much of a weight penalty for temperatures above freezing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It is as described. The coat is as described. Some people are complaining that the hood should be lined, etc. It is not meant for that. It is essentially a rain jacket over the top of an insulted, hoodless warm jacket. You pair them togetherin cold +/- rainy conditions or you can separate the two as needed. I ordered the blue color for my son and he is very happy. He is 15yrs old and I'm glad he'll even wear a coat at all as he is like most teenage boys who would rather not. He likes this one very much and the idea that he can have a rain jacket and warm liner all in one or separated is very appealing to him.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great jacket! Surprisingly very warm for how lightweight this jacket is. Was breaking a sweat working out in 1 degree and windy weather. Truly water and wind proof. Highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best winter jacket I've ever owned Bought this jacket for a birthday present for myself. Just in time for 14" of snow and sub-zero wind chill temps. Perfectly warm in -2 degrees while scraping ice and snow off the truck at 4 am. Kept me toasty in frigid Colorado weather. My search for the perfect winter jacket ended with this one.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from This coat has flaws -- that should be easily corrected. Before buying this coat I compared it to many other coats, and I wore a similar TNF coat for several years. I bought this coat because it had fewer design flaws than the others. My biggest gripes are: 1) the pockets and hood are not lined, 2) the main zipper feels cheap and smallish (not easy to grip and thread), 3) the entry angles for the side pockets are too high for comfortably keeping your hands in the pockets, and 4) there are no inside pockets to secure valuables like a passport or travel documents. I wear this coat only in cold (and wet) weather, so a hood lining would be a lot more comfortable and warm against my face than cold plastic. Same goes for lining the pockets. Also, the hand pockets are cut at bad angles, so my arms are kind of pinned against my chest instead of hanging more freely near the waistline when my hands are in the pockets. And the fit is a bit tight compared to the previous TNF 3-in-1 coat I had. The weather hasn't been really bad yet this winter for me to fairly comment on the other aspects of the coat, such as its waterproofing, warmth, and wind protection. I really want to like TNF products, but I don't feel really good about this product based on these design flaws. I would have bought another, better coat if I could find it. I wonder if TNF designers actually wear this coat, because these kinds of defects are obvious. TNF, are you listening?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love my new Winter Jacket!! I bought myself the Black one, I live in Wisconsin so this cold can get very bad. I looked for reviews on many coats for the 3 in 1 jackets that are offered and ultimately I chose the Carto because I liked the interior jacket more than the other ones available. The jacket is very warm, I have yet to wear it in negative degree weather but even in the 20s there is never any issues with the cold. It looks very good you can choose to wear both jackets zipped together Or just the interior or exterior jackets and both look great!! Fits true to size and is very comfortable. The price is on the higher side but so are the rest of the 3 in 1 coats. You pay for what you get, and what you get is quality! North Face never fails!! Only complaint I have is that the logo is the same color as the jacket, It would have been nicer if it was patched. Other than that I am very satisfied with the quality of the product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really cool jacket! Love the Color! Ski jacket. It runs a little small compared to my other NF jacket.
