DWR tech

Durable Water Repellent
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is a coating that is applied to fabrics which makes them water-resistant, or hydrophobic. A DWR finish doesn't interfere with breathability, which makes it perfect for adverse conditions in the backcountry.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Needs Serious Water-proofing I have had a version of the recon backpack for about three years now. It is very roomy and durable and I would definitely recommend it. I use it for college along with traveling for the military. My main concern, however, is the lack of waterproofing on the bottom. Maybe my waterproofing has worn off, but every time it gets remotely wet, the bottom of the contents inside end up soaking. I have gotten many notebooks, textbooks, and my military medical records soaking wet. I usually love all my products from The North Face, and I used to love this backpack but I am extremely disappointed in the lack of quality waterproofing that has cost me a lot of frustration.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing I absolutely love this bag. My old NF bag failed to fall apart, so I finally decided to upgrade my 10 yr old bag once it got a stain from lunch I brought to work. This new bag is stylish, the top handle is reinforced, and I love all the pockets and compartments. My only complaint is that I keep my smaller compartment full of go to items and it often weighs down the top end of my bag and makes it a narrow space to fit items into the large compartment. I still am able to fit everything I need to and love the shape and ergonomics of this bag. I use this for everyday commute to and from work, travel, backpacking. I love the heather grey color too! Just as pictured.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely worth it! When I first found this backpack, I knew that it was the perfect fit. I have been looking for a bag that would be big enough for school and fitting all the binders on a day-to-day basis. This backpack is beyond perfect for that. It is a good material, but more importantly, it is perfectly big enough and has a million pockets. If I wanted to, I could separate all my school needs into its own pocket in this backpack. So, it is perfect for those who like organization and being able to find things with ease. Overall, I recommend and it is definitely worth it. It kinda makes me excited for the next school year....

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Inconvenient Design After looking at a lot of backpacks, this one seemed to have the best features for commuting with a laptop. After using it for several weeks I now wish I could return it. 1) The pack is structured in such a way that it creases half way down when opened. This makes it hard to get items into and out of the bottom because it basically seal itself shut at the midpoint. 2) The accessory pocket exacerbates the crease. It's constructed as a pouch in the inside of the main compartment but isn't sewn all the way across the bottom. It happens to fall right at the crease mentioned above, so items constantly snag in this pouch when trying to squeeze them through the crease. Try so slide some items in and out of the bottom before you buy it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely recommend this backpack I haven't had this backpack for very long but so far I love it. I've used it for travel so far but plan on using it for school as I head to college. I love all of the compartments as it will help me keep all of my stuff nice and organized. Also, it is extremely comfortable and it fits a lot. The straps on the back are nice because I can tighten it against my back so it isn't too bulky. The last north face backpack I had didn't have that feature which I didn't like. However, this backpack seems to be the perfect backpack for me! Since I haven't had it too long I can't comment on durability or anything like that but so far it seems to hold up well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Greatest backpack on the planet The absolute best backpack I have ever owned. I take this this everywhere with me, on my motorcycle, to work, to the gym, to the beach and everywhere I travel. It's been all over the world with me and has held up for about 6 or 7 years now. It has really been beaten up by the sun, dragging it around, rain, sweat, blood, salt water,'s been through it all. The only signs of wear is the water resistant lining is starting to peel off the edges of the secondary compartment, and the stash pocket elastic is stretched out. Also, there's some fading on the fabric from the sun. One of the buckle clips cracked on one side, but it's still functional! I would love to buy another one, but the one I have still works fantastically well. A+ bag. I love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've had this backpack over 15 years (older version) When my mom took me into The North Face store when I was in high school, the sales person told us that this backpack had a lifetime guarantee. I was so excited and turned to my mom and said this is great! I can jut bring it back at the end of this year when it wears out like mine do every year. Well it didn't. I used it through college, grad school, and beyond. And now I'm 33 and have 4 kids and am passing it down to my 2nd grader just so I have an excuse to finally get a new backpack. I use it constantly and it still looks new. It looks like there are so many new features now on the newer version of the same bag. I can't wait to get a new one and I hope it lasts another 15 years +!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Backpack meets expectations. The backpack will primarily serve as my college support system for books, laptop, water bottle and all the other things necessary for a day on campus. It also travels with me on trips and will be my go to pack when I take a semester in France. I expect a lot from my backpacks and use them until i can't anymore. My current pack is ripping at the bottom and EMS is no longer around I had it for 4 years. I appreciate the life time warranty North Face has and their good reputation. I look forward to using this for my last year and a half of college and then for getting to and from my future job as an engineer.
