Durable Water Repellent
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is a coating that is applied to fabrics which makes them water-resistant, or hydrophobic. A DWR finish doesn't interfere with breathability, which makes it perfect for adverse conditions in the backcountry.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Broke after 2 months; terrible customer service *This is my second attempt at submitting a 1-star review for this item. For some odd reason, TNF did not post my first submission.* I purchased this bag in December. My son began using it in January; by March, one of the shoulder straps had already torn off. It was only used for school and otherwise still looks brand new. I contacted customer service, but the rep I chatted with was indifferent and curt. We own many TNF products and have never had an issue with quality, so this one was disappointing. My only recourse is to send the bag back at my own expense. I was told that it would take 8 weeks and that it may or may not be covered by warranty.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great backpack, but beware of the weight!! This is my second Northface backpack -- a Bigshot from almost 10 years ago was my first. I think that says a lot about the quality and durability of Northface back packs. This Surge backpack builds on top of that -- great pockets, compartments, and functionality. That being said, I was a little surprised how heavy this backpack is empty when I first got it mailed to me. 3 pounds, 3 ozs! Every pound matters, especially when I travel international trips with my laptop + DSLR camera (4 lbs /w lens). Northface, hope you can somehow find a way to trim the weight off the unburdened backpack (off the next generation). That would be great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I absolutely loved this backpack but... This backpack would've been perfect if it had a bigger tablet pocket. I use an iPad Pro 12.9in for college and when I place it in its designated place and it sticks out because the tablet pocket isn't deep enough. I still trusted the backpack, went to school did nothing crazy, then I noticing my iPad seemed to be bent. The bend was right at the area the pocket didn't cover, when I would wear my pack it put pressure on my tablet. I absolutely loved this backpack, it was PERFECT but the sleeve cost me money I couldn't spare to repair my device. I will wait for a new design because The North Face still remains to make the best all around packs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than the previous Surge almost in everything I owned Surge 2 for 5 years before buying this one. And I must say it is better in almost every sense. Waist band is detachable, which is good, since I used it maybe twice in 5 years. Front compartment became smaller, and middle compartment even bigger. One of the organisational compartments moved into the middle one. And there is an additional partition in back compartment, so your laptop and folders can be kept separate. Additional front handle is seldom useful during flights, when you want to pull the bag from under the seat. Only downside is that Surge 2 had a bit more organisational compartments. Wish there was at least one or two more to keep everything well organised.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Would 100% repurchase this product and recommend to others! I have purchased the Northface Surge 8 years ago. That backpack was amazing to me. I used it during high school, undergrad, and a year abroad traveling across Europe. It was still functioning perfectly and the cloth was not even worn down. The only reason I purchased another version is because a red ink pen broke at the bottom and all the papers/books I kept in the bag were turning red even after washing the bag. Other than that, I would have loved to keep my original. This updated design is quite nice and thought out well. I honestly cannot recommend a better working/everyday laptop backpack that also meets the rigor of traveling and being on the move.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It worked well for 5 weeks I bought this for my son (10th grade) to use for this school year. He absolutely loved it until the strap started tearing. He only carried it 5 weeks before it started ripping away from the bag. He hasn't carried any real books in it either. It's only used for two binders, some notebook paper, and his gym clothes. It wouldn't have lasted a week if he had been bringing his books home. Customer service is replacing it and we should have the new one on Monday. The bad part of that is we had to go out and buy a bag for him to use until the new one comes in. Beyond frustrated at this point. You'd think it's great quality at the price I paid for it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely great backpack, it's simply so well designed! After searching a while for a backpack that fits my needs, I came up on the new Surge, and it was a perfect fit from the get-go! It is roomy, with each compartment so well designed that it fits my needs to the T. Laptop pocket, tablet pocket, places to store everything from charging cables to an umbrella. Quality build, light as a feather! One minor hindrance is that the straps that allow you to expand the backpack or keep it tight come slightly in the way over the water bottle pockets, but it's nothing big! Slightly on the expensive side, but I think of it as a one time purchase, atleast for the next few years!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Five surges for four kids Thank you North Face for creating one of the few products that I know can handle the test of time. Our son got his first North Face backpack for high school 9 years ago-- it survived both high school and college... and just now is starting to wear out. Our oldest daughter has used hers for 6 years-- and it is just starting to wear out. Our middle daughter is only three years into using hers, so it is in great shape. And now today-- I purchased our youngest her first North Face backpack for high school. Stay tuned. These backpacks have carried more than their backs should carry!! Not only are they are built to last--they are comfortable and keep them organized!! Thank you!!
