Rated 5 out of 5 by from Time Tested Favourite. I bought the Therm-a-Rest Trail Scout last winter, and since then I have put this thing under some serious stresses. Its been a long time favourite of mine, and I'm proud to say that "I respect this pad" for its Warmth, Comfort, Functionality, and Cost. This pad is a true winner, especially if you are new to the game. It is an excellent series and hope to see them for years to come. The only thing I would say about this pad that I would say is opposing is if you are intending to sleep on the ground, Its material can be punctured quite easily.... however the repair side of things is a breeze. Gorilla Tape To Go sticks to this pad like no other, making it the easiest pad repair I have ever done.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love. Love. Love. I bought this when I knew I was going to spend a year doing a lot of camping and adventuring. Thanks to its thin and light build, I was able to squish it in to almost any packing arrangement (and, if all else failed, lash it to the side of my pack). It was easy to get inflated. I can fill the whole thing with only a few deep breaths, which made setting up camp quickly much easier. It's held up astoundingly through many rigours. It kept me surprisingly comfortable and warm through any variety of experiences.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great initial buy! I've had a regular size trail scout for a couple of years now through dozens of hiking trips around the central US, as well as backpacking in Ireland and Italy. For the money, it's easy to use, warm for the majority of the camping I do (it's been good for all but my winter trips), and far more comfortable than a closed-cell foam pad. It packs down fairly small as well, without having to try too hard or wrestle it. There are certainly more comfortable, warmer, and lighter products out there, but it's been an effective, solid, and reasonably budget-friendly option. Now that I'm hiking a lot more and cutting weight from my pack and doing winter hikes, I'll be acquiring an Xtherm MAX to extend my options.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not as good as they used to be I have two 20 year old, blue and red Thermarests which are fantastic. Used them a lot and still look like new, made of quality materials. Now having a family, I bought another one trusting the quality is still there. This Trail Scout, which I bought online is a disappointment, seemingly made of cheap materials and can't see it last 20+ years like the old ones. Lucky if I get a couple of seasons out of it. Yes I know it is not the most expensive of the line, but still a Therm-a-rest, and more expensive that the competition. The outer shell is made of thin cheap plastic and brand new out of the box is already deformed from the the way it was packaged, no matter how hard I inflate it. Ii will send it back if I could.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super durable and no slipping and sliding! I bought two of these for me and my partner two years ago for backpacking. While they aren't the lightest thermarest sleeping pad, the scout has two features I adore. First, the scout has a rubbery, almost sticky rubber coating. This is great because it keeps the pad from sliding around on the nylon floor of the tent and it helps me and my slick sleeping bag stay on the pad. I often hear that as a complaint about thermarest pads - not an issue on this model. Second, this pad is durable! We use our pads a lot and have even used them day after day for several months at a time (and that use was outdoor in WA, OR, CA, MT). I would guess we have at least spent 200+ nights on our pads and after all this time neither leaks. Highly recommended

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very comfortable!! I was so surprised at the comfort of this pad. I am a big guy (6'2" 250#) and this has not let me down. Self inflation is quick and I only have to add 4-5 puffs of air to get it to my liking. On VERY cold nights, I put it in a home made sleeping bag liner (flannel from local craft store) and it slides nicely inside my mummy bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for the thrifty backpacker! I was in great need for a new roll mat. Considering I was using a cumbersom old air pad that was like sleeping on a half inflated balloon. I stumbled across the trail scout. It was light weight, compact and durable. Not to mention the price was right. I have thus used my trail scout for five years now without missing a beat. Comfortable to sleep on especially for my arthritis. It's not as thick as most pads but for the buck it's well worth it! I liked it so much I purchased a second one for my wife. Since then we've been taking our dog with us and as long as there is a blanket on the pad her nails don't cut into the pad.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb Durability and Reliability in a Light/Small Package I used this product every night for a 30 day mountaineering trip in the Waddington Range of British Columbia. With a 5 day bushwack, sharp alpine rocks, and freezing storms, the trip was brutal on my group's gear. I did not have a single problem with the trailscout for the entire trip, even after multiple nights of cowboy camping on it directly on rocks. Furthermore, the r-value proved true, as we camped on snow on glaciers most nights of the expedition, and the chill from the snow beneath me did not penetrate the pad. The best extolment I can give this pad, however, is that the absolute worst part of each day during the expedition was deflating the pad in the morning and having leave its warmth and comfort. I can assure any potential buyer that bringing this pad on a tip will make it your reliable safe haven from the cold and rugged wilderness. Let me be clear that this is not the lightest pad you can purchase from thermarest; however, it is the best balance of durability and weight I have experienced.
