The Therm-a-Rest Xlite Max SV Sleeping Pad is a quick inflating air mattress for three season backcountry camping. When you're on the trail, ultralight gear is a treat for your shoulders and back, and so is a good nights rest. With the new SpeedValve™ your mattress is inflated pretty darn quick, not just lifting you up with some cushy air, but providing much needed warmth against the cold ground with reflective ThermaCapture™ Barrier technology. In the morning, that same SpeedValve™ allows the pad to deflate ultra quick, so feel free to sleep in a bit longer, camp won't take as long to pack up.

ThermaCapture Radiant Heat Technology is a proprietary reflective coating that we apply to a range of surfaces. By reflecting radiant heat back to your body that is otherwise lost, this extremely lightweight coating turns that surface into a very efficient heat reflector, amplifying warmth without the excess weight or bulk of added, conventional insulating materials.

Super light and tinyI bought it to reduce pack size and weight. It is fantastic on both fronts. I've had it on glaciers in Canada, rocky surfaces in the Cascades, and on sweltering bluffs in TN. Of the 12+ nights I've slept on it, it partially deflated once on one of the early trips. I'm pretty sure it was because I didn't roll it tightly. It is important to note that I've gotten the valve wet, dirty, and wadded up, but all I had to do was wipe it off and straighten it out with my hand and it worked just fine. The speed of deflation is wonderful. For those of you who are worried about it being noisy, I can attest that it makes more noise than my old Thermarest, but it hasn't taken away from my experience. Also, don't blow it up all the way. It's more comfortable a little on the soft side. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Dear SpeedvalveDear Speedvalve,
Where have you been all my life? Long ago I would just roll out my blue foam pad, content to feel the rocks & roots through its feeble thinness. Then I was on to a self-inflating deal that was a little more ample in its size but still not all that comfy nonetheless. After that I wanted something bigger. I moved on to a nice thick pad with a hefty R-value to keep me off the ground in the summer and off the snow in the winter. It was glorious to sleep on - like floating on a pool raft - but a real pain to blow up. Every night as my friends were already passing the flask I'd still be sitting there, somewhat light-headed as I puffed away to get enough air into that bad boy.
And then I met you, Therm-a-Rest Xlite Max SV. Your Xlite-ness makes you easy to carry. Your Max-ness makes you oh-so-comfy (and warm). But it's your SV-ness (that's speed valve to you uninitiated) that makes us friends 4-ever.
At first I thought it was a gimmick. Some nonsense about the bernoulli principle or something from my 5th grade science fair days. But no joke it really works. I can blow you up in like 10 puffs, and not even hard puffs that make me go all light headed. Just easy puffs. And in the morning? WHOOSH! No more squeezing and laying and rolling around on my pad, trying to squeeze all the air out of a tiny little valve. I just pop open the top and roll you up. So fancy. All my friends are jealous. ExcellentThis pad is very very good. The SV (speed valve) works brilliantly with no leaking for me at all. Stays tight and full all night after my weight on it all night. Got to just roll/fold the flap up carefully 7 times like the instructions say. Maybe users who are experiencing slow deflation are rolling the flap backwards - I did it once the wrong way and the top of the mat sits funny. When you have inflated the pad as much as you can using the speed valve (about 7 big breaths for me for the Large 25" wide pad) you need to roll and fold the flap FORWARD/OVER 7 times, then fold and snap the clasp so that the plastic clasp sits under the pad, ie flush to the ground. If you roll it the other way (the wrong way) the plastic clasps will sit facing up and level with the top of the pad - this is wrong.
The actual best thing about the speed valve is the speed it deflates the pad. Open the speed valve and the air rushes out immediately with a bang (if you are laying on it) It is much much faster to then roll up the pad as most of the air is already out, and any remaining air exits easily as you roll it up. Unlike a normal mummy shaped neo-air Xlite pad with the small valve, it is quite painful and slow to squeeze the air out of the pad and this limits the speed you can roll up that pad. So the SV value is far superior in this regard and makes pack up at least 2-3 x faster. So its much faster to blow up and much faster to deflate and pack up.
The other main thing I love about this pad is the rectangular shape. No having my feet fall off the sides like they do on the mummy shaped neo-air xlite pad everytime I move or turn over. These two features - speed of inflation/deflation and feet not slipping off pad all the time make the extra 100 - 150 grams cost over the Neo-air xlite equivalent worth the weight cost in my book.
Neo air xlite Regular pad 350 grams (12 oz)
Neo air xlite SV Regular pad 460 grams (1 lb) (+ 110 grams / 4 oz)
Neo air xlite Large pad 460 grams (1 lb)
Neo air xlite SV regular pad 600 grams (1 lb 5 oz) (+ 140 grams / 5 oz )

Works if used as intendedIf you are using another inflatable thermarest, the speed valve is very convenient compared to the old smaller valve. Alot of other reviews have said that it leaks through out the night, id be willing to bet its due to user error, not defective product. If you roll the flap flat and the 7 times, it wont leak. Ive had it inflated for 3 days with a pack on it and have seen no noticeable deflation. Coming from the trail lite pad, this is so much smaller, more comfortable, and lighter. I've never had an issue with the noise either, but it obviously is noisier than other styles. Id recommend this pad over the original neoair, even if it is a few oz more. Being able to dry the inside of the pad will prevent mold growth and the ease of use is worth every oz. For full retail price its pretty steep, but if you want a quality pad this seems like a good option. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
